ICJ Referendum postponed until further notice

Posted: Wednesday, April 10, 2019. 5:05 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Belizeans were gearing up for that historic decision on April 10, 2019 to vote on whether or not to take Guatemala’s claim on Belize’s territory to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for final settlement.

But, on Wednesday, April 3, 2019, Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin granted an injunction halting the referendum scheduled for April 10, 2019.

Later the same day, Prime Minister Dean Barrow hosted a press conference assuring the public that the referendum would go on per scheduled since the Government would appeal the decision at the Court of Appeal.

On Monday, April 8, 2019, the Court of Appeal upheld the Chief Justice’s injunction. PM Barrow hosted another press conference yesterday evening informing officially that the April 10th referendum is being postponed until further notice.

“We will not be having a referendum on Wednesday April the tenth. I am in no doubt that we will be having a referendum on going to the I.C.J. no later than six to eight weeks from the originally scheduled date,” Barrow stated.

PM Barrow has stated that the Government is considering taking the case to the CCJ to lift the injunction.
