DECATUR, Georgia (CNN) -- Singer Bobby Brown is in trouble with the law again, this time for failing to appear in a Georgia court to face numerous traffic charges from more than five years ago.

A judge issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Brown on Tuesday after he failed to appear in court the day before, the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office announced.

The warrant says Brown failed to appear before the state court as required by conditional bond orders issued in November.

He also violated that bond by leaving the state, "as witnessed by his appearance on a television program broadcast from California," the warrant says.

The bond conditions were set during Brown's appearance in court last November to face charges stemming from an April 1996 arrest. The charges include driving under the influence, having no proof of insurance, failure to maintain lane, and speeding.

The singer's lawyer, Xavier Dicks, told Sheriff Thomas Brown his client would turn himself in Friday, according to the sheriff's office.

Police arrested the entertainer in Atlanta in November on drug and traffic charges, and later discovered he was wanted on the 5-year-old warrant.

Brown launched his career with the 1980s group New Edition before embarking on a solo career that has often brought him more attention for run-ins with the law than for his music.

In January 1998, Brown was convicted in Florida of two misdemeanors: driving under the influence and causing property damage. Brown crashed into a condominium sign while driving the sports car of his wife, singer Whitney Houston. He served five days in jail and was released on probation.

In May 2000, the singer was arrested by U.S. Customs agents in New Jersey after he and Houston returned from a trip to the Bahamas.

The arrest stemmed from an outstanding warrant accusing him of violating probation in the Florida drunken-driving case. The warrant had been issued nearly a year earlier, in June 1999, after Brown's probation officer reported that evidence of cocaine had been found in his urine test.
