The story of Snow White just got more colorful. Disney is developing Rose Red, a live-action film centered on Snow White’s sister, EW has confirmed.

Pitched by Evan Daugherty and based on a script by Justin Merz, the film aims to put a new spin on the Snow White fairy tale by inserting Rose Red into the story and making her a key player — along with the seven dwarfs — in the quest to wake her sister from a death-like sleep.

Tripp Vinson is producing.

Merz originally wrote Rose Red as a standalone movie, and Daugherty came up with an updated take complementing Disney’s 1937 animated classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. (In the Brothers Grimm tales, Rose Red appears in a story unrelated to the well-known version of Snow White.)

Rose Red marks the latest live-action Disney project reinterpreting one of the studio’s beloved animated movies. They include recent films (Maleficent, Cinderella), upcoming ones (The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast), and a slew in development (including Vinson’s Genies and Prince Charming).

Daugherty is no stranger to fairy tale lore, having written Snow White and the Huntsman for Universal. His other credits include Divergent and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Merz wrote the 2014 animated film The Boxcar Children.

The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news about Rose Red.
