DAZN To Break New Ground In Italy With Landmark Serie A Streaming Deal

This article is more than 5 years old.

DAZN has announced that it will launch a streaming service in Italy with a three-year deal to broadcast 114 Serie A matches per season.

The deal is the first time a pure live and on-demand streaming service has been awarded exclusive Serie A rights in Italy.

The package starts with the 2018/19 season and includes a Saturday evening match (local time), two games on Sunday, three exclusive games for every midweek round of fixtures and highlights of all Serie A matches.

Subscribers will pay €9.99 ($11.80) per month to watch games on an array of devices including smart TVs, PCs, smartphones, tablets and games consoles.

No rights fee has been announced although the Financial Times pegged the cost at €600m ($700m) over the three years.

The other part of the deal has Sky Sport Italia agreeing to pay €773m ($900m) each year for a larger package of 226 matches per season.

Even though the combined value of the two deals failed to meet the target of €1.05b ($1.24b) per season this will be welcome news for Serie A.

The league was forced to renege on a deal with Mediapro after the Italian Courts intervened and the tender had to be reissued.

DAZN currently operates Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Japan and Canada, and is set to launch in the US this summer. DAZN recently signed a $1b boxing deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing and it is expected that the agreement will be a cornerstone of the American launch.
