BTS Were The Top-Grossing Touring Group Of 2019

This article is more than 4 years old.

As if they hadn’t already broken enough records in 2019, BTS can now take a bow as the top-grossing touring group of 2019, according to Billboard's year-end Boxscore charts.

The South Korean pop septet grossed over $196 million and played to more than 1.6 million people across 42 shows in the chart period ranging from Nov. 1, 2018 to Oct. 31, 2019. The group outgrossed legacy rock acts like the Rolling Stones, Metallica and KISS, as well as fellow boy band the Backstreet Boys. BTS also ranked third overall on the year-end Top 40 Tours chart behind Ed Sheeran and Pink.

These figures are culled from BTS’s Love Yourself World Tour, which hit arenas and stadiums in Asia, North American and Europe; and its Love Yourself: Speak Yourself Tour extension, which hit exclusively stadiums and also dipped into South America. As previously reported, the Love Yourself: Speak Yourself Tour alone grossed $116.6 million and sold 976,283 tickets.

In addition to their No. 3 placement on the Top 40 Tours tally, BTS also landed at No. 6 on Billboard’s Top 25 Boxscores list. Their two-night engagement at Pasadena, California’s Rose Bowl on May 4 and 5 grossed $16.695 million and drew 113,040 attendees.

During this tracking period, BTS were riding high off the success of their latest album, April’s Map of the Soul: Persona, which became their third consecutive No. 1 album in the United States behind 2018’s Love Yourself: Tear and Love Yourself: Answer. They became the first band to score three No. 1 albums in the U.S. in a year since the Beatles in 1996 with their three-part Anthology collection.

At this point, the sky's the limit for BTS, especially when it comes to touring. The group has already proven it can pack stadiums around the world, something that many American legacy acts and contemporary pop superstars struggle to do. The question is no longer what they can accomplish, but what they will accomplish in 2020.
