A hologram comes to the rescue in 'My Holo Love.'
What if you could not only talk to your AI personal assistant but also see him? That’s the premise of the new drama My Holo Love, starring Yoon Hyun-min and Ko Sung-hee.
In My Holo Love, a firm creates an AI manifestation that passes the Turing Test, the test developed by scientist Alan Turing in 1950 to measure a machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behavior equivalent to or indistinguishable from that of a human.
To see the hologram, the AI specialists have designed a special pair of glasses. Put them on and you can see a hologram so handy that it can tell you the weather, finish your work report or help you escape thugs in a car chase.
This highly secret, newly developed technology winds up on the face of a woman who has trouble distinguishing faces, which is ironic because she works as a marketing specialist with an eyeglass company.
This inability to recognize faces, including those she sees daily, has made her social life difficult and that’s where a personal assistant hologram might come in handy. However, their first few meetings didn't go well. Someone that seems like a ghost is creepier more than he is comforting.
As AI becomes a bigger part of everyone’s lives, stories about the possibility of romance between humans and a form of artificial intelligence are becoming more common. It’s a theme that came up in 2019 in Are You Human, starring Seo Kang-joon and My Absolute Boyfriend, starring Yeo Jin-goo. It doesn’t always work out well for AI-human relationships. A holo may seem better than the best boyfriend in that he only wants to make you happy, never lies to you, and you can easily update his style, but ultimately it’s not the best prescription for a lasting relationship.
Yoon plays the charming and helpful hologram, Holo, while Ko plays the woman he helps, So Yeon. Fortunately Yoon also plays the real life Ko Nan-do, whom the hologram was at least physically modeled after. His personality is nothing like his holo prototype and maybe the holo has something to teach him.
Choi Yeo-jin plays the woman who helped develop the holo glasses. Choi previously appeared in over a dozen dramas, including On The Way To The Airport and Emergency Couple, as well as the 2018 film The Deep. 2PM’s Chansung plays an executive at her company, who may not have the best of motives. Chansung’s most recent drama appearances were in I Married An Anti-Fan and Touch Your Heart. He also appeared in the 2019 film Rose and Tulip.
Before starring in My Holo Love, Yoon appeared in the dramas Tunnel and Mama Fairy and the Woodcutter, while Ko can be seen in Ms Ma, Nemesis, Mother, While You Were Sleeping and the Korean version of Suits.
It’s not easy to see where this plot is going, but one thing is clear. Even if a human-AI relationship is problematic, well-intentioned AI interference could lead to two humans connecting.
