New FOX 5 Poll: Clinton, Trump tied in Florida

ATLANTA - A new poll conducted for FOX 5 Atlanta and sister stations FOX 13 Tampa and FOX 35 Orlando shows a statistical tie between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump in the key battleground state of Florida.

The poll conducted on September 27-29 of 619 registered likely voters in Florida shows Clinton with a one point lead over Trump in the race for the White House.

Here are the results: 

Clinton: 47%

Trump: 46%

Johnson: 4%

Stein: 2%

Undecided: 1%

FOX 5 Political Analyst Matt Towery, Sr., believes Trump has work to do for the Sunshine State to remain Republican.

Towery said, "The presidential poll indicates a tighter race than some suspect in Florida at the moment. But the internals of the poll tell me that Mr. Trump is losing ground that he must shore up to have a chance of winning the state.”

Towery sees a reason for Trump’s slippage.

“The demographic breakdown clearly shows that Donald Trump has lost some support from older voters, who were up, until now, the backbone of his campaign. This is no doubt due to post-debate fallout. But Trump actually has a plurality of the youngest of voters. This is not because his popularity is growing, but because younger voters continue to drift towards the two other candidates in the race and not to Hillary Clinton”, said Towery.

The political analyst also sees some surprising support for the Republican nominee.

Trump said, “Like the recent FOX5 poll of Georgia, Trump still shows an unusually high support from African-Americans of 33%, a number which I expect to melt away and follows a traditional pattern for polls conducted in the southeastern U.S. But Trump's near dead even number with Clinton in the Hispanic-Latino community is not an aberration and may actually hold through the election. That community in Florida is far more diverse and complex with regard to political ideology than most national pundits recognize.”

 “Trump performs worst among voters age 30-44 who prefer Clinton by a wide margin. Trump's challenge will be to make some gains among those in that age group and to rebuild his support among older voters. Clinton's challenge will be to persuade the youngest of voters that she is the only viable alternative to Johnson and Stein.”

The poll also showed Floridians say a winner in Monday night’s debate.

Towery said, “As for Monday's debate, 51% say that Clinton won the contest, with 41% stating Trump won, and 8% undecided.”
