A brief curling club history

The first club was established in 1868 and was built on Victoria Street. The open air rink on the Madawaska River was still being played on.

It was 1886 when the club finally became incorporated.

This would span 147 years of history of curling clubs buildings in Arnprior. There have been many versions of the club throughout that time. There was one in 1871 and again in 1876 where it moved to Harriet Street. That location was demolished in 1899, when a two-sheet curling rink showed up on Elgin Street.

It was revamped to a three-sheet rink in 1935 and even included a ballroom. The club finally has settled on the Arnprior Fairgrounds in 1969 and officially opened to the community in 1970.

Over time, curling clubs without artificial ice had a harder time attracting new members because natural ice had a short ice season – only mid-December to mid-March.
