Man charged with murder after police officer killed in Auckland

A man has been charged with murder after the fatal shooting of a police officer in west Auckland on Friday.

The 24-year old has been charged with murder, attempted murder and dangerous driving causing injury.

He will be appearing in the Waitakere District Court tomorrow.

The investigation is ongoing and police are unable to rule out the possibility of other people being charged.

manhunt had been underway for several hours to find the offender with police speaking with two 'people of interest'.

The shooting occurred at 10:28am on Friday when two police officers attempted to pull over a vehicle of interest in "a routine traffic stop".

After crashing, a man exited the vehicle and shot at two police officers. One died and the other sustained serious injuries to the leg and is in Auckland Hospital. 

As the offender and a passenger tried to get away in a second vehicle, the car struck a member of the public, who received serious injuries and is being treated in Auckland Hospital.

The Armed Offenders Squad (AOS), an Eagle helicopter and a Westpac helicopter were all called in to assist in the manhunt.

Police Commissioner Andrew Coster says his thoughts are with the victim's family. 

"Our thoughts are with the family of the slain Police officer and we are continuing to ensure they are provided with all possible support," Coster says.

"The other injured police officer and member of public remain in hospital in a serious but stable condition and we are also supporting them and their families."
