Lincoln Stars News Release

LINCOLN, Neb. - Lincoln Stars owner Ryan Schiff announced today the team has removed the interim tag from General Manager and Head Coach Chris Michael, officially making him the seventh head coach in franchise history.

Michael, 38, was originally named Interim General Manager and Head Coach on April 3rd.

"We wanted to take a breath before jumping into this, but there is no reason to wait any longer," Schiff said. "We are certain Chris is the guy to continue to grow our culture, build young men of great character and on-ice ability and of course compete for a championship annually. Needless to say, it's an exciting time for our organization."

"I want to say thank you to Ryan Schiff for the trust he's putting in me and the opportunity he's giving me to lead this storied franchise into its next chapter," Michael said. "It's truly an honor and privilege to be able to be a head coach and GM in the best league in junior hockey. The depth of the coaches and players of this league is truly remarkable and is unmatched anywhere else."

"I look forward to continuing to grow the culture that we set forth at the beginning of last season and to take the next step in recreating the championship culture that's needed for success in our league," Michael continued. "We are very excited about the players that we have returning from this past season and on our affiliate list and will look to build around them through the draft next month. We are all excited to come back and play in front of the best fans in the USHL at the Ice Box."

The Skokie, IL native served as the associate head coach for the Stars in the 2019-20 season, his third year on Lincoln's coaching staff. Michael spent four seasons in Omaha with the Lancers as an assistant coach (2013-14) and associate head coach (2014-17). Before making the jump to the USHL, Michael spent four years as head coach at one of the premier AAA programs in the country: the Chicago Mission. He amassed a record of 216-54-27, collected four State Championships, two USA Hockey Central District Championships, one USA Hockey National Runner-Up, and the 2013 USA Hockey U16 National Championship during his tenure in Chicago.

Michael's USHL ties extend to his playing days as he registered 68 points in 112 USHL games with the Green Bay Gamblers (2000-02). He played college hockey at Miami (OH) University from 2002-06, posting 81 points in 137 games. Michael helped lead the RedHawks to the 2006 CCHA Championship, along with the university's first-ever No. 1 ranking in the country and two NCAA National Tournament appearances.
