Hasbro explains why Rey was excluded from Star Wars: Monopoly (update)

Hasbro has recently come under fire for excluding Daisy Ridley's Star Wars: The Force Awakens character, Rey, from its movie version of Monopoly.

The game, which allows players to choose between four characters from the Star Wars universe, is just another piece of The Force Awakens merchandise that has riled up fans after Rey was excluded. In this case, however, people questioned Hasbro for excluding Rey and including Darth Vader, who doesn't even make an appearance in the film.

Hasbro did release a statement to Entertainment Weekly following the accusations and said that although Rey wasn't included in this particular version of Monopoly, the character was featured in a variety of other games and added that the company had plans to release more Rey-centric merchandise.

In its defense, Hasbro said that the reason they couldn't include Rey in the game was because of spoilers.

"The Star Wars: Monopoly game was released in September, months before the movie's release," the statement reads. "Rey was not included to avoid revealing a key plot line that she takes on Kylo Ren and joins the Rebel Alliance."

Hasbro did not mention whether or not it included plans to release an updated version of the game with Rey's figure included. As of right now, people can choose to play as either the aforementioned Darth Vader, Finn, Luke Skywalker or Kylo Ren.

Update: Hasbro said on Twitter today that it plans to add Rey to its Star Wars-themed Monopoly game.
