Calgary signs Hathaway, Kennebunkport native

The Calgary Flames signed Kennebunkport native Garnet Hathaway to an entry-level contract on Monday.

Hathaway is in his first full season in the AHL with Adirondack. In 72 games this season, he has 19 goals (tied for the team lead), 17 assists and 77 penalty minutes.

The 23-year-old played four seasons with Brown University. He played four years of prep school hockey at Phillips Andover Academy in Andover, Massachusetts.

Calgary finished third in the Pacific Division and faces Vancouver in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

RUNNING

KENYA: The country’s athletics federation suspended the agents of marathon world record holder Dennis Kimetto and other top stars while it investigates the spike in doping among the country’s runners.

The two management companies are the Netherlands’ Volare Sports and Italy’s Rosa & Associati.

Rosa & Associati represented women’s marathon star Rita Jeptoo, who was banned for two years for the banned blood booster EPO.

Volare Sports’ clients include Kimetto and former marathon record holder Wilson Kipsang.

FOOTBALL

JURISPRUDENCE: Former NFL running back Lawrence Phillips is suspected of killing his cellmate in a Central California prison, officials said.

Phillips’ cellmate at Kern Valley State Prison in Fresno was found lifeless early Saturday and later pronounced dead, a prison spokesman said in a statement.

Phillips, 39, was once one of the nation’s top college football players at Nebraska. He played for the St. Louis Rams, until being released in 1997 for insubordination.

Phillips is serving a sentence of more than 31 years.

• William & Mary has removed former Tribe and NFL safety Darren Sharper from the school’s Hall of Fame.

Sharper ended a 14-year NFL career in 2011. He was working as an NFL network analyst when women began telling police in several cities similar stories of blacking out while drinking with him and waking up to find they had been sexually abused.

Sharper eventually pleaded guilty or no contest to raping or attempting to rape nine women in four states.

NFL: The Colts put outside linebacker Aaron Morgan on the reserve-retired list.

A shoulder injury forced the 26-year-old to miss all of last season.

• The New York Jets signed running back Stevan Ridley and linebacker Joe Mays.

MONTE CARLO MASTERS: Ernests Gulbis was eliminated at Monaco in the first round, losing to Andreas Haider-Maurer 6-1, 6-0.

SOCCER

GERMANY: Eintracht Frankfurt forward Alexander Meier, the Bundesliga’s leading goal scorer, is out for the season with a knee injury and will have surgery.

Meier tops the Bundesliga with 19 goals, ahead of the Bayern Munich duo of Arjen Robben (17) and Robert Lewandowski (16).

Robben is also out with an injury and Lewandowski could win the scorers’ title for the second year running. The Poland striker topped last season’s scoring list with 20 goals.

COLLEGES

BASEBALL: St. Joseph’s (18-10) held on for a 13-12 win over Bowdoin (8-13) in a game at Standish that featured 32 hits and seven errors.
