Hockey: Kennebunkport's Hathaway prepares for upcoming NHL Draft

Garnet Hathaway has done everything possible to improve his stock for the upcoming National Hockey League draft in June. Now all he can do is wait and see where the chips will fall.

The 18 year-old Kennebunkport resident just ended his senior season with the Philips Andover (Mass.) Academy hockey team. He led the squad in scoring with 37 points and was one of the team's captains.

His efforts helped bolster his value in the Central Scouting Rankings from No. 173 among North American skaters at the midterm to No. 110 in the final rankings.

One thing is definite. Hathaway will play for Division I Brown University next season. As for the NHL, well, that's something he has always wanted.

"I'd love to (play in the NHL)," Hathaway said. "That would be a dream come true."

Hathaway has the size for the NHL at 6-foot-2 and weighing190 pounds.

He spent the offseason working with several different coaches and trainers to prepare himself for his final season at Philips Andover. All of that hard work has paid off as he has positioned himself for a possible chance at being selected.

John Hathaway, Garnet's father, is proud of what his son has accomplished in the sport he's so passionate about.

"My son has worked very hard and I think hard work pays off," John Hathaway said.

Garnet Hathaway doesn't have a favorite NHL team, but likes to watch Johan Franzen of the Detroit Red Wings as much as possible.

Franzen is 6-3 and 222 pounds. Garnet likes Franzen's style of play and listed himself as a power forward as well.

Garnet grew up playing for the Biddeford Youth Hockey Association and at a young age knew that hockey was something he would be good at.

"Things had a way of clicking together at the right time," he said.

Now, he has become one of the best hockey players in the area and he has also received a great education while doing so. The NHL may be in his future, but right now the plans are to continue his education and he will do that at one of the highest levels possible next year.

"Education is really important to me," Garnet Hathaway said. "When I came to Andover I took a step to get the best education I can."
