STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Two historic Staten Island buildings have been designated landmarks, as the Landmarks Preservation Commission concluded its backlog initiative on Tuesday.

The commission voted to designate as New York City landmarks the Brougham Cottage, at 4746 Amboy Rd., and the Lakeman-Cortelyou Taylor House, at 2286 Richmond Rd.

The commission designated 10 sites located around the city on Tuesday -- in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens, in addition to Staten Island.

The landmark designation decisions were based upon public outreach and research by the commission. A total of 27 properties were designated under the backlog initiative.

"I am thrilled that through this ambitious and unprecedented effort, we have granted full landmark protection to 27 outstanding properties, and cut through a 50-year backlog in a matter of 18 months," said Commission Chair Meenakshi Srinivasan. "We're very proud that the designated properties are from all five boroughs and represent a diverse array of building typologies. ... This is a great day for preservation in New York City!"

Brougham Cottage is a Dutch-American farmhouse dating back to the 18th century.

The Lakeman-Cortelyou Taylor House, a Dutch Colonial style farmhouse, was the home of Aaron Cortelyou, who was one of the founders of the Moravian Church on Staten Island, and who played an important role in the American Revolutionary War.

In addition to Brougham Cottage and the Lakeman--Cortelyou Taylor House, the Staten Island properties that were designated landmarks during the backlog initiative are: 92 Harrison Street House; George W. Curtis House, 234 Bard Ave.; St. John's Protestant Episcopal Rectory, 1331 Bay St.; Vanderbilt Mausoleum and Cemetery, Moravian Cemetery, Richmond Road and Altamont Street; Prince's Bay Lighthouse and Keeper's House, Hylan Boulevard.
