Should Britain join the euro?

Gordon Brown was warned yesterday by one of his most senior colleagues to give up his stranglehold on the euro and let the rest of the Cabinet have a say in the decision on joining the single currency. The Telegraph wrote, "The euro is another example of how the dogmatic approach preferred by so many European politicians is the wrong course to take. As a currency trader would say, the trend is not Mr Blair's friend". Should Britain adopt the euro?

No. Why would any country rationally choose to hand over its sovereignty and, consequently, its control over its own future? Wendy from Malaysia

NO Under any circumstances . European union is an economic and political experiment dreamed up by eurocrats in their ivory towers which will never work and probably will fragment soon. Not for Britain we value our independence too highly to join the mele. The EU is a spineless organisation that pretends to be a world power to rival the USA but when the chips are down shrivel away from their global responsibilities. Too many cultures languages attitudes and self interests to gel efectively. The Euro will be a disaster for us and a problem we could never escape from if we join. I give the union five years to see the whole lot crumble away and who knows the start of internal conflict amongst its ever increasing numbers. Say No UK and don't shrink from your responsibility for our future generations sake. Henry from UK

No, we should not join the euro. sadly many people think that it would just mean that we would not have to exchannge mony before going abroad whic would be fine but the real problem is we will no longer be in controle of our own bank rate etc. Jill Herbert

No. The British must keep their sterling. It is their identity. Why give up your identity? Marie

Keep our individual status--THE POUND. Barbara Dunn from UK

We joined the common market for free trade not for a United Europe. It will never be united. My family fought in 2 world wars to stop Germany dominating Europe. No Euro, no EU. Colin from Malaysia

Definitely NO to the Euro for Britain. Like the "Mao jacket" that the Chinese once adopted it will in time be discarded by all its wearers. Jim from UK/USA

Keep the pound and keep all sovereignty and control within the UK.There is only chaos ahead for the new Tower of Babel being construced by self serving eurocrats who are creating the biggest gravey train in history. john from Botswana

The British Pound Should be kept. Europe will bring with it deep instability into the future. Those who row their own boat row better. David from Australia

When someone else is messing in your oatmeal, you may find it too sticky. Beldon from USA

No euro as it the bigges rip off ever, price has gone up 3 folde. Judy

Yes we must join and the sooner the better. Paul from UK

We should only join if we meet Gordon Brown's 5 principles, which can be interpreted in so many different ways we could (and should) avoid it for ever. Len from UAE

Please stay out of the common currency. The perceived advantages are commercial but the loss of control and the distinction of an historic and separate form of exchange are far preferable.Deborah Dacombe

No, because the UK has never really been a part of Europe, and I hope it never will be. E.Virginia Pearson de brito

The UK should leave the euro well alone, unless it wants rampant inflation, which all Euro-zone countries have, and are still, suffering since its introduction. Keep Sterling! Erica de Graaff-Hunter from Spain

NO, NO, NO, NO, NO. It would be the end of Britain and France and Germany would have us where they want us, under their thumb. Pamela from USA

The Euro will be the downfall of Europe. France and Germany with their totally socialist governments will bankrupt the entire monetary system and expect Britain to pay for it. Both of them feel it is Payback Time! Germany for "Weltkrieg I & II, France for warring with Britain and then having to have Britain save its butt in WW I and for NOT surrendering in WWII along with France. Why give them a chance? Are we as a people that stupid? ? ? Have we not spent billions of pounds fighting them and then defending them? Give us a Break! NO EURO! We want our own sovereignty, our own Soveriegn. It's worked for us for 1,500 years. Tom Ray

Sirs, Under no circumstances should Britain adopt the Euro. The pound is the guarantee of freedom in this decade, much like Magna Carta was in 1215. Europe (France and Germany) think they can alter history and cancel the results of two world wars by trickery, do not fall for the scam they propose. If the proposed European Constitution is adopted, God help Britain, for no one else will! W. McM from Canada

Without the Euro Britain has had a more secure economy and less unemployment than most of the EU. Bad as the present government is, it seems to have managed better than the EU. We cannot afford to give up this control. Without the Pound, we will losed some of our British identity which is very different from that of mainland Eurioe.

No you have a stable currency outside the euro. Colin from Canada

Do not joinEuro & get out of European Union. John Vye from France
