“The 14 new stars in our 2015 guide highlight the enormous richness and variety of the UK’s restaurant scene. They range from country pubs to hipster hangouts, from counter-restaurants to classic dining rooms”, said Rebecca Burr, editor of the Michelin Guide.“The public’s knowledge and interest in food gets greater every year and it won’t just be fans of cookery shows who will be planning trips to Devon to the Treby Arms.”

Several of the London restaurants are in their first year of trading: Jason Atherton's City Social, Simon Rogan's Fera at Claridge's and Karam Sethi's Gymkhana. City Social is the third of Jason Atherton's Social establishments to gain a Michelin star, following Pollen Street Social and Social Eating House.

Gymkhana's Karam Sethi said of his win, "The award caps off a perfect year for us and is a testament to my team of chefs at both Gymkhana and Trishna, headed by group head chef Rohit Ghai, Brinder Narula, Nand Kishor and Sajeev Nair. Together we’ve worked very hard to create restaurants that serve great, authentic Indian food, and we’re striving to keep getting better as we enter Gymkhana's second year.”

Destination restaurants which lost their stars include Nobu, Nobu Berkeley Street and Chelsea's Medlar.

Telegraph Luxury's reviewer and editor of Square Meal Ben McCormack said of the new awards: "I'm sorry that L'Enclume in Cumbria hasn't been elevated to three-star status as I can't think of anywhere else in the UK that better represents the three-star requirement of "worth the journey". The new London and English one stars are all solid choices but it's great to see Scottish and Welsh classics such as Three Chimneys and Ynshir Hall attracting very well-deserved attention."

The Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland 2015 is priced at £15.99.
