Cabinet moves to Tuesdays

The Cabinet is to meet on Tuesdays instead of Thursdays in future as part of Gordon Brown's determination to demonstrate a return to traditional Cabinet government.

Downing Street announced yesterday that the Cabinet had been summoned for its third meeting in less than a week on Tuesday.

Mr Brown's spokesman said the decision to hold Cabinet on Tuesday mornings had been taken to allow time for more lengthy discussions.

The Thursday meeting - which has been the post-war tradition - now clashes with the Commons as a result of the introduction of more "family friendly" hours.

Yesterday's Cabinet meeting, Mr Brown's second, lasted an hour and three-quarters - nearly twice the length of the average Blair Cabinet.
