Awards won by Guardian News & Media in 2008:

Foreign Press Association Award, December 2008
Observer reporters Afif Sarhan, Caroline Davies and Mark Townsend won the award for the Foreign Press Association Print and Web News Story of the Year. Judges described their report of the 'honour' killing in Basra of 17-year-old Rand Abdel-Qader as "an extraordinary piece of journalism of a shocking nature".

Record of the Day Awards, December 2008
Caspar Llewellyn Smith, Editor, Observer Music Monthly was named Editor of the Year and Kitty Empire was named Writer of the Year at the Record of the Day Awards. The Guardian picked up an award for best music coverage.

British Press Awards 2008.
The Guardian and Observer lead the nominations with 20 in total and picked up awards for digital journalist of the year - Sean Smith, interviewer of the year Chrissy Iley - freelance (Observer Magazine), and foreign reporter of the year -Ghaith Abdul-Ahad. Guardian.co.uk was named website of the year.

David Watt Prize for Journalism, July 2008
Jonathan Freedland has been awarded the David Watt Prize for Journalism. The prize is awarded for journalism which makes "an outstanding contribution towards the greater understanding of political issues." Freedland's winning article examined the effects of the Bush presidency and appeared in the New York Review of Books.

Marco Luchetta Journalism Award, June 2008
Clare Dwyer Hogg's article; 'Has anyone seen this child?' written for the Observer Magazine has one the D'Angelo Prize at theMarco Luchetta Journalism Awards in Italy.

Amnesty UK Media Award, June 2008
Xan Rice received the Gaby Rado Memorial Award for his coverage of Africa. The award is presented to a journalist who has covered human rights for less than five years.

One World Media Awards, June 2008
Karen McVeigh won the Press Award for her series of articles Asda, Primark and Tesco Accused over Clothing Factories. In the New Media Award category sponsored by Tearfund, GNM's tracking of the Katine Project in Uganda through theguardian.com, Katine: It Starts with a Village, was felt by the jurors to do "a brilliant job of bringing ordinary people from a small African village into global conversations".

In the intensely debated Environment Award sponsored by CAFOD, Guardian environment editor John Vidal triumphed for his article Sold Down the River, which appeared in the Guardian Weekend Magazine.

The Press Photographers Year Awards, June 2008
Sean Smith received the Mulitmedia Award for his video Inside The Surge, which documented the two months he spent embedded with US troops in Baghdad and Anbar province.

Mind Journalism Awards, May 2008
Society Guardian writer Mary O'Hara has been named Mind journalist of the year, winning the prestigious award for her consistent, powerful coverage of mental health issues. The judges, praising her clear analysis of emotive issues and the strength of her campaigning journalism, said that her "tenacity in standing up for people with mental health problems . . . shone through in her wide-ranging reporting".

Sports Industry Awards, May 2008
The Guardian and theguardian.com have been awarded the Sports Coverage of the Year accolade at the 2008 Sports Industry Awards, for their groundbreaking achievement across newspaper and online platforms in 2007. The judges said the, "consistent deliveries of stunning photography, in-depth analysis and respected columnists has become the hallmark across all the Guardian's media platforms."

Recruiter Awards, May 2008
guardianjobs.co.uk has picked up a gong at the prestigious Recruiter Awards, winning best job board, beating off competition from fish4jobs.co.uk, exec-appointments.com and jobsgroup.net. The judges commended the site's "real ease of navigation and the understanding of client needs."

The 2008 Newspaper Awards, April
The Observer won the award for Newspaper Design of the Year.

ACE Press Awards, March 2008
For the third year running our Production, Distribution and Sales team have been honoured at the ACE Press awards, winning an unprecedented two Gold awards for Most Effective Promotional Campaign and Outstanding Circulation Innovation. Both awards were in recognition of the exceptional retail trade marketing over the past year and rewards the strategy of working closely with retail partners to develop sale. The ACE Awards recognise the effort and success achieved by circulation and distribution staff in all aspects of the newspaper and magazine industry.

Onrec.com Awards, March 2008
Guardianjobs.co.uk has won an Online Recruitment Award for the Best Technical Innovation. The award is in recognition of new features built into the site when guardianjobs.co.uk relaunched last year. These features are particularly effective at allowing recruitment advertisers to reach passive jobseekers across the whole of theguardian.com. The Onrec.com Awards have been established to celebrate the success, growth, innovation and talent within the Online Recruitment Industry.

Society for News Design (SND29), February 2008
The Guardian has beaten hundreds of newspapers across the globe to be named the world's best designed daily paper for the second time in three years. In their citation, the judges from the Society for News Design, based in the New York, said: "We liked the Guardian's section-by-section consistency. Its coverage of the Benazir Bhutto assassination wed strong headlines to striking photography, giving the event a dramatic but respectful visual structure. The Guardian is a repeat winner because it does every day what others might take a week or more to accomplish. It is a paradigm of excellence and endurance and intelligence. Three weekly papers, Akzia from Moscow, Expresso from Lisbon and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagzeitung, were also named in the World's Best Designed category.

Royal Television Society Award (RTS), February 2008
Guardian photographer and film-maker Sean Smith has won the Royal Television Society award for best international news for his work Iraq: Apache Company - the first time a newspaper has won such an award. The film was described by the judges as "raw, brave, atmospheric and profoundly memorable. An important story very powerfully realised".

Journalism.co.uk multimedia storytelling competition, February 2008
A special report looking at the provision of education in an area of Mali has won the inaugural Journalism.co.uk multimedia reporting competition. Judges praised the combined use of voiceover, stills and video footage within a series of slideshows, that made up the Learning Lessons in Africa report, calling it a 'compelling story' and a 'seamless piece of journalism' that set it apart from other more technically adventurous projects. Photographer Ami Vitale and videographer Dan Chung complied footage in Mali for the report, which was then produced by Elliot Smith with interactive design by Paddy Allen.

Workworld Media Awards, January 2008
Leo Benedictus has been named Feature Journalist of the Year for his Working life series of interviews with porn stars, undertakers and train drivers. Hsiao-Hung Pai received a commendation for her No Place Like Home report on the abuse of migrant domestic workers. The Observer's Richard Wachman won the reporter of the year category. Judges said, 'It's a true pleasure to read his stories.'
