Business writer award for Guardian

The Guardian's Business Pages won their second major award in a week last night after winning business journalist of the year at the prestigious British Press Awards.

Ian Griffiths won business journalist of the year for his special investigation into car manufacturer MG Rover. The judges praised Griffiths for being a "story-getter and consistently good".

Last week the Guardian beat off competition from the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times to win newspaper of the year in the World Opinion Forum's business journalism of the year award.

Elsewhere in the British Press Awards, Rupert Murdoch's red-tops swept the board with the Sun and the News of the World picking up eight trophies between them, including scoop of the year and young journalist of the year.

The News of the World carried away the biggest award of the night, newspaper of the year. Editor Andy Coulson praised his "dedicated and unique" staff as he accepted the award.

The Sun's political editor, Trevor Kavanagh, won reporter of the year for his coverage of the Hutton report leak.

The Guardian's sister paper, the Observer, won travel writer of the year, with Tim Moore picking up the award.

· Paul Abbott, who devised and wrote the Channel 4 drama Shameless, swept the board at the Royal Television Society Awards last night, winning best drama series, best writer and the judges' award for outstanding contribution to TV drama over two decades.
