Boris to return to Telegraph column

This article is more than 15 years old

Newly elected London mayor Boris Johnson will return to the Daily Telegraph - where he is expected to earn about £250,000 a year for his weekly column.

Johnson will resume writing for the newspaper in the summer and write the column at weekends for publication on Monday or Tuesday, his spokesman Guto Harri confirmed.

Harri revealed that Johnson had been "inundated" with offers from local papers in the capital seeking a column and that he had decided to write a weekly piece for them.

"He will also write for local papers in London. He will do that free of charge," Harri added.

Johnson suspended his Telegraph column in January during his mayoral campaign.

Harri would not confirm Johnson's £250,000 Telegraph salary but said the figure would be declared in the mayor's register of interests when it was published.

The mayor will donate £25,000 from his Telegraph salary to a "Boris bursary" for students of journalism at the London College of Communications and £25,000 for the teaching of classics at state schools in the capital.

Johnson has already said he will axe the Londoner, the free mayoral newspaper launched by his predecessor Ken Livingstone, saving £3m.
