Site’s deputy editor to take over from Katharine Viner, who has returned to the UK to take over as as editor-in-chief of the Guardian

Lee Glendinning has been appointed as editor of Guardian US, having served as its deputy editor and head of news since late last year.

She replaces Katharine Viner, who returned to the UK to take over as editor-in-chief of the Guardian this week following the departure of Alan Rusbridger.

During Glendinning’s time at Guardian US, it has increased its audience to almost 30 million unique visitors, accounting for more than a third of the Guardian’s global readership. She has been closely involved with recent high-profile stories about US police brutality including the Homan Square “black site” in Chicago and unrest in Baltimore. Guardian US on Monday launched an interactive project counting killings by US police.

Commenting on Glendinning’s appointment, Viner said: “Lee was an integral part of the success of Guardian Australia from the beginning, and has had a similarly dramatic impact on Guardian US, bringing excellent news judgment, digital flair and personal tenacity as well as strong management skills. Having worked very closely with Lee for the last two years, I know that she will make Guardian US an even bigger success.”

Glendinning said: “It is an incredible privilege to lead Guardian US as we continue to cover the stories that matter to our American audience and to deepen our engagement with readers around the world. I’m honoured to follow Kath in this role and to work with such an inspiring, dedicated and talented team of journalists. I really feel there is no limit to what the team at Guardian US can achieve.”

Glendinning previously worked alongside Viner in launching Guardian Australia.

It was also announced that Guardian deputy editor Paul Johnson and Guardian Australia editor Emily Wilson will remain in their roles, as will Observer editor John Mulholland, who will also be taking on the role of Guardian assistant editor with responsibility for developing the organisation’s approach to live journalism.

Viner said: “Paul, John and Emily are immensely respected colleagues and talented journalists. I am honoured to have them by my side as, together, we look to shape the future direction of Guardian News & Media.”

Further senior appointments are expected in coming weeks.
