Business news wesbite follows Indian launch with African team of about five based in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa

Business news site Quartz is to launch in Africa this June, starting with a small staff of about five people likely to be based in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.

Quartz Africa editor Yinka Adegoke will head the editorial team, moving between Quartz’s New York HQ and Africa. The site will also use freelancers and other contributors.

Quartz was founded in 2012 by the Atlantic Media Company, owner of 177-year-old US periodical The Atlantic. The site recently racked up 10 million unique users a month for the first time.

The site launched an Indian edition in June last year.

“Quartz’s continued global expansion is a natural progression following a year of encouraging international growth,” said Quartz president and publisher Jay Lauf.

“In looking at the success of Quartz India, staff expansion around the world and with an eye on producing more international events, Quartz Africa will allow us to continue to pursue our mission of bringing high-quality digitally delivered journalism to all regions of the world.”

“It’s a truly thrilling time to cover the continent with the youngest demographics and several of the world’s fastest-growing economies,” said Adegoke.

“Those dynamics are just beginning to unleash pent-up creativity, and are driving innovation and attracting smart investors from around the globe.”

Sales for Quartz Africa will be run out of the US and the UK, where Quartz established an office in summer 2013 that has since grown to about 10 people.
