Stephen Maguire and Jamie Burnett questioned over alleged irregular betting patterns during UK championship match in December

The snooker players Stephen Maguire and Jamie Burnett have been released after being detained by police today and questioned over alleged irregular betting patterns during a match last year.

The players were detained by Strathclyde police after the Gambling Commission launched an inquiry into a match between them during the UK Championship in December.

A Strathclyde police spokesman said both men were questioned for four hours and released without charge.

The spokesman said inquiries were continuing, and a report would be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

Maguire – currently ranked second in the world – won the first round clash, played in Telford on 15 December, 9–3 after Burnett missed a black which would have reduced his arrears to 8–4.

Before the match, the game's governing body, World Snooker, was contacted by bookmakers reporting suspicions over heavy betting patterns on a 9-3 Maguire win.

Both players have strenuously denied any wrongdoing and pledged to co-operate with any investigation.

The commission's inquiry was passed to Strathclyde police's economic crime unit in April.

Today, Maguire, 28, and 33-year-old Burnett, both from Glasgow, helped police with their inquiries in connection with the outcome of the match.

"Our economic crime unit can confirm that two men, aged 28 and 33, have been detained and are assisting Strathclyde police with their inquiries into the alleged irregular betting pattern associated with the snooker match involving Stephen Maguire and Jamie Burnett," a Strathclyde police spokesman said earlier today.

World Snooker said it was aware the players had been detained.

Maguire turned professional in 1998 and won two ranking titles – the Northern Ireland Trophy and the China Open – in the 2007-2008 season, according to the World Snooker website.

Burnett, ranked 40th in the world, made the highest break yet scored in a professional snooker competition – 148 – in the 2004 UK championship qualifiers.
