Jessica has a reputation as being an athlete who can peak perfectly for the major championships. Ennis made her breakthrough in 2005, winning the European Junior Championships title, improving the national junior record to 5891 points, before winning the bronze medal at the World University Games, improving the record again to 5910 points.

At the 2006 Commonwealth Games, Ennis made a huge improvement, scoring 6269 points to win the bronze medal in Melbourne and then finished eighth at the European Championships, in another PB of 6287 points.

Having established herself as a world-class multi-eventer, Ennis set a PB at the European Indoor Championships, finishing sixth with 4716 points, before improving her heptathlon lifetime best three times in the outdoor campaign.

In Desenzano del Garda, Ennis equalled the British high jump record of 1.95m, en-route to victory, amassing 6388 points and then defeated team-mate Kelly Sotherton at the European Cup in Szczecin, adding another 11 points to her PB. In Osaka at the World Championships, Ennis finished outside of the medals finishing fourth, albeit in a lifetime best of 6469 points.

However, in fher first outdoor competition of 2009 she recorded a lifetime best of 6587 points to win by 510 points in Desenzano del Garda, Italy. This was a fantastic performance after she was forced to miss the Olympic Games in Beijing with a stress fracture in her ankle. She finished off the event with a pb in the 800m with 2:09.88. The performance moved her to third on the UK all-time lists, with a score only bettered by Denise Lewis (6831 points) and Judy Simpson (6623 points).

She went into the 2009 World Championships in Berlin as a resounding favourite and that mantle didn't affect her performance as she duly delivered the goods leading from the first event through to the end and recording a life-time best of 6731 points which is exactly 100 points behind Denise Lewis' UK best. Her first day score has only been bettered by Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Carolina Kluft. In total over the season she recorded six PBs at 100m, 800m, 100mH, Long Jump, Shot and Javelin. At the 2010 European Championships in Barcelona she again started as favourite and produced the goods again in a closely fought competition winning in a life-time best of 6823 points only eight points behind the UK best. Earlier in the year she had also secured the IAAF World Indoor Pentathlon title in Doha with a score of 4937 points and also produced an early season victory in the heptathlon with a points total of 6689 in Gotzis in poor conditions. At the 2011 World Championships in Daegu she had to settle for the silver medal after a below par javelin cost her valuable points, however this was then upgraded to Gold after a ban of Tatyana Chernova. A year later in 2012 Ennis finally landed the biggest prize of all in the Olympic heptathlon with a British record of 6955. She also recorded a magnificent and world class performance in the 100m hurdles stopping the clock at 12.54 for another British record.

In 2015 Jessica made a return to power after the birth of her first son Reggie she won the World Heptathlon Championships. The following year she won silver in the Olympic Games before retiring from the sport.
