Oil production starts offshore Vietnam

CALGARY, Alberta, May 21 (UPI) -- Canadian company Talisman Energy said it expects to produce 15,000 barrels of oil per day from its newly launched development offshore Vietnam.

Talisman said it started oil production at the offshore Hai Su Trang and Hai Su Den development ahead of schedule. Once the facilities are commissioned, the company expects gross production to reach 15,000 bpd.

"We are delighted to have achieved first oil ahead of schedule and under budget," Talisman Regional Vice President Paul Blakeley said in a statement. "This is a remarkable achievement and consistent with Talisman's objective of bringing projects on-stream safer, better, faster and at lower cost."

Talisman said the field came online 18 months after receiving approval to move forward. Talisman holds a majority stake in the development alongside national energy companies.

The development is about 45 miles off the southern coast of Vietnam in shallow waters.

The CIA World Fact Book estimates that Vietnam in 2011 produced 318,000 barrels of oil and 300 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day.
