BETHESDA, Md., March 27 (UPI) -- Two Washington Metro trains derailed Friday afternoon south of the Bethesda (Md.) Metro station, causing delays but no injuries, Metro officials said.
The Red Line trains were about 600 feet apart in a tunnel, The Washington Post reported.
Eighty-four passengers got off one of the trains and boarded a rescue train while an investigation was conducted to determine the cause of the derailment -- which occurred just before 4:30 p.m. EDT when a six-car Red Line train had brake problems as it moved through the Bethesda station.
Metro spokesman Steve Taubenkibel told the Post the train "could not move."
Officials tried to move the train by coupling it with a second train that was behind it. The second train, also a six-car train, unloaded passengers at Medical Center, the next stop north of Bethesda, and traveled toward the first train -- but before it could get there, its lead wheels went off the track.
Taubenkibel said Metro personnel discovered around that time that the first train wasn't moving because the rear wheels in its last car were also off the track.
