Bahuguna arrested, construction on Tehri project starts

Environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna was today arrested along with 75 others for stalling work of the 2400 mw controversial Tehri hydel project.

Environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna was today arrested along with 75 others for stalling work of the 2400 mw controversial Tehri hydel project.
Following the arrests, authorities resumed work of the mega hydel project stalled since March 30, police said adding prohibitory orders under section 144 of CRPC has been promulgated in the entire Tehri area.

Bahuguna, who was asleep, was called out from his house and taken to nearby Narendra Nagar, his son Rajiv Bahuguna, a journalist, said.

Most of other agitators, who were enraged over the arrest of 84 people on Sunday, were taken to Hardwar jail, police said.
The Uttaranchal High Court has given clear-cut instructions that the work of Tehri dam must continue, The district magistrate, Tehri, Radha Raturi said referring to today`s arrests.

The situation was fully under control, assistant director general of police, anil raturi said. Meanwhile, a group of people blocked vehicular traffic at tehri bus stand to protest today`s arrests, police said. However, no untoward incident has been reported.
