TEXT DETECTION

After releasing a sticker maker tool that makes it easier for users to create stickers right within WhatsApp for iOS, WhatsApp is rolling out another feature that uses iOS 16 APIs, and it is now available for everyone. In particular, we announced the ability to extract text right of an image, available to some beta testers that installed the WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.1.0.73 update, and WhatsApp is now rolling out this feature to everyone after installing the latest WhatsApp for iOS 23.5.77 update:

While the official changelog on the App Store still mentions that the ability to record a voice note and share it through Status is rolling out to everyone, as mentioned in the article about the WhatsApp for iOS 23.5.75 update, we can also confirm that more people that will install this version of WhatsApp can finally extract text right out of images. If you want to test this feature, you need to open an image that contains text and you should finally see a new button that lets you copy text from the image.

As we explained in the article when the feature has been released to beta testers, this feature is only available on iOS 16 as WhatsApp uses iOS 16 APIs to detect text within images. In addition, this feature is not compatible with view once images for added privacy.

WhatsApp usually releases new features slowly, starting with a small group of beta testers before gradually making them available to more and more users over time. This was the case with this particular feature, which was first released to beta testers and then made available to a small number of users in earlier updates on the App Store. Finally, WhatsApp started releasing the feature to everyone thanks to this update.

The ability to extract text right of images is available for more iOS users so be sure to update the app from the App Store to check if the feature is already enabled for your WhatsApp account.
