Gary Johnson has signed a new five-year contract at the club.

The news was announced at an Ashton Gate press conference this afternoon, when Gary was joined by a delighted chairman Steve Lansdown.

The City manager's new contract ties him to the club until the summer of 2013.

He told bcfc.co.uk: "I'm very happy to have signed this new deal.

"The chairman sat down with me over the summer and in the early parts of this season to explain his ambitions for the club. I was very impressed and wanted to be a part of it - and also pleased that he wants me to be a part of such ambition.

"I've been here for three seasons now and we've already made some big strides, both on and off the pitch. The club wants continuity and it's an honour to be asked to be part of that.

"We've worked very hard and asked the fans to see and understand what we're trying to do here. Crowds have gone up to record numbers so I think most supporters agree with what we want to do.

"I've got fantastic staff with me and it would be good to keep that together.

"The chairman and board of directors have always been understanding to my demands and in football that is a very big bonus."

Chairman Steve Lansdown told bcfc.co.uk: "I believe for Bristol City to be successful we have to think long term and ensure stability at the top.

"Gary Johnson has proved a top manager and I'm delighted he has committed to the club for the next five years.

"I look forward to working with him for what I am sure will be an exciting time for this football club."

Gary joined City from Yeovil Town in September 2005 and immediately steered the club away from the relegation zone to the verge of the play-offs in League One.

The following season his new-look side gained automatic promotion to the Championship - the club's first promotion for nine years.

Fresh off the back of signing a new two-year extension in August 2007, Gary guided his side to a fourth place finish in the Championship and reached the play-off final.

A slender 1-0 defeat to Hull City at Wembley prevented City winning promotion to the Premier League in May, but, under Gary's guidance, the club has again begun their new Championship campaign strongly.

Gary's previous clubs include Newmarket Town, Cambridge United, Kettering and Yeovil Town; and nationally with Latvia for two years.
