Mandalay citizens protest against Tatmadaw rule

Approximately 30 Mandalay citizens held a protest against the Tatmadaw’s (military) forced transfer of power in front of the Mandalay University of Medicine on February 4.

The armed forces on February 1 detained the country's president, U Win Myint, and State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, along with other senior figures from the ruling party in response to alleged poll fraud by the Union Election Commission.

They have since declared a year-long state of emergency with Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services Min Aung Hlaing now in power.

The protest saw people hold up signs supporting democracy and the civilian elected government while condemning the Tatmadaw’s actions.

They chanted slogans demanding the release of the detained leaders and wished for the military dictatorship’s failure.

This would lead to the eventual arrest of some of the protesters by police in mufti. - Translated
