Myanmar Mobile Industry Association suspends cooperation with govt

The Myanmar Mobile Industry Association (MMIA) has announced that it will no longer cooperate with the government and its departments in light of the country’s ongoing political unrest.

The association recently released a statement stating its refusal to work with government bodies as per the desires of its members.

The statement said that the MMIA had always tried to meet the needs of the country since its establishment but recent political developments have led to the association deciding to serve only the interest of its members.

It also called for the Tatmadaw to release senior figures from the civilian-elected government including President U Win Myint and State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

Earlier reports said that tax on mobile phones and other communication devices contribute approximately K2 billion to Myanmar’s revenue in previous years.

The association and the Ministry of Commerce also concluded negotiations in 2019 to introduce revenue stamps on mobile handsets to bring in more revenue for the country.

A number of other associations in the country have also released statements voicing their displeasure against the military’s forced transfer of power.

These associations include the Myanmar Edible Oil Dealers' Association, Myanmar Rattan and Bamboo Entrepreneurs Association, Myanmar International Freight Forwarders' Association, Myanmar Avocado Producers and Exporters Association, Myanmar Container Truck Association, Mandalay Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Myanmar Cosmetics Association, Myanmar Corn Industrial Association and the Shan State Wholesalers and Retailers Association. - Translated
