Myanmar calls for boycott of Tatmadaw linked products and services

The Myanmar populace is pushing for the ‘Stop Buying Junta Business’ campaign as a sign of protest against the country’s current political conflict.

The movement which urged Myanmar citizens to not buy and use products affiliated with the Tatmadaw went viral on February 3.

It is seen as a sign of support for democracy and the civilian elected government and against military dictatorship and the Tatmadaw’s declaration of a one-year state of emergency.

The military, on February 1, detained the country's president, U Win Myint, and State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, along with other senior figures from the ruling party in response to alleged poll fraud by the Union Election Commission.

They then declared a year-long state of emergency with Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services Min Aung Hlaing now in power

The Tarmadaw has been linked to a large number of businesses in various sectors. They have been associated with food and beverage products, cigarettes, the entertainment industry, internet service providers, banks, financial enterprises, hospitals, oil companies, and wholesale markets and retail businesses, among others.

Specific products include Myanmar Beer, Dagon Beer , Mandalay Beer, Mytel telco services, Ruby cigarettes, Nann Myaing & Pyin Oo Lwin coffee, Shwe Phi Oo instant tea, the Kantharyar Private Hospital, 7th Sense film productions and the Shwe Mann Thu & Shan Ma Lay Highway Express.

"I am going to dismantle it and use something else,” said Ko Hein from North Dagon Township, in reference to his Mytel internet service.

Many others have voiced similar intentions to stop using services provided by the telco.

A number of celebrities have also taken to Facebook to announce that they will not endorse or work with any armed-forces related corporations. - Translated
