Nectar Guard tips easily slide onto the feeding ports on the underside of the feeders cover. The flexible membrane in the center of each tip easily opens when hummingbirds insert their beaks to feed and close up tight when beaks are removed. ******update********. I've changed my 5 star review to 3 stars and here's why: I had no problem with these last year, but recently I just put them on my feeder (after having started feeding without them on because I ran out of them) and all of the sudden I've seen NO hummingbirds feeding in probably 2 weeks or more now!!!!!
I just removed them last night to see if they return and start feeding again?
I don't understand? I never had this problem before with these guards! But it's no mystery, they were feeding daily .... UNTIL I Added these guards onto the feeder!!!!!
Now maybe it's because I started out the season without the guards and it deterred them when they weren't used to feeding with them on?
I did stick a pin through the feeder port and into the guard to see if I could get through to the nector and I could...... As long as you stick it right through the center.... If you go towards the sides you can't get through to the nector.... But this is how they've always worked....
So I'll keep you updated!
My plan is to see if they come back to feed. Once they do, I'll add one guard per week or two (there are 4 feeding port holes total) until they get used to the guards being on there!
Like I said before, I've never had this issue before! They'd maybe get deterred for a day or so once I added guards on, but never for this long :(
****updated review*****
I changed my review BACK to 5 STARS again because even after removing the guards, I still saw no hummingbirds for 3-4 weeks!!! So it was NOT the guards causing it..... I researched it a bit and found that in the spring, the Hunmingbirds will come to the feeders a lot and then their appearance to the feeders can drop off drastically because they start nesting.... And it's common then that some may see them a lot less or not at all for a while, and then once summer is here you will see them
At the feeders a lot again! So, I think this is what may have happened here??
All I know is that I put all the guards back on my feeder because I'm finding little knats in the hummingbird juice if I don't use the guards, and insects dead in the feeder contaminated the hummingbird juice causing me to
Have to clean and fill my feeder more often! These guards really work!
