Memorable Manitobans: Hugh Clifford “Cliff” Chadderton (1919-2013)

Community activist.

Born at Fort William, Ontario on 9 May 1919, son of William Hugh Chadderton and Gladys Muriel Blackburn, he attended Kelvin High School and the University of Manitoba, after which he worked as a journalist for the Winnipeg Free Press and later the Canadian Press. He also played hockey for the Winnipeg Rangers, a farm team of the New York Rangers. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he enlisted with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. In October 1944, he lost part of his right leg while serving as an officer commanding an infantry company. Returning to Winnipeg, he spent the postwar years lobbying on behalf of veterans and also the rehabilitation of child amputees. He was Secretary of the National Council of Veterans, and National Secretary (later Chief Executive Officer) of the War Amputees of Canada, serving until 2009. In recognition of his exemplary community service, he was inducted into the Order of Canada (1977) and he received the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal (2002) and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012). He died on 1 December 2013. He is commemorated by Chadderton Lake in the Duck Mountains of western Manitoba.
