The Book

A Fire that Blazed in the Ocean: Gandhi and the Poetics of Satyagraha in South Africa, 1909-1911 is a 150-page book that makes available, for the first time to English readers, 35 poems that originally appreared between 1909 and 1922 in the Indian Opinion, a newspaper started by Mohandas Gandhi in 1903.

The book is the result of interdisciplinary collaboration between a historian and a scholar of cultures and religion, and is the only anthology dedicated exclusively to Gandhi's impact on Satyagraha poetry in South Africa.

Praise for the book, A Fire that Blazed in the Ocean

...historic...an indispensable resource...raises many important questions...testimonial to the hopes for social justice and racial equality...
