£1 million award for HIV collaboration : A group of scientists at Oxford's Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine has been awarded £1 million by the Wellcome Trust for a collaborative project with Professor Jon Weber's department in Imperial College, London.

T-rex in Oxford for the next millennium : A forty-foot-long replica of the giant carnivore Tyrannosaurus rex will be among the new arrivals joining the dinosaur displays in the Oxford University Museum of Natural History by summer 2000.

Centre for Suicide Research launched : A new university research centre to investigate the causes and prevention of suicide and attempted suicide has been launched.

Spin-off company announces major expansion plan : Opsys, a University spin-off company which specialises in developing new organic electro-luminescent technology for flat panel displays, has announced a multi-million pound expansion plan.

New Professor of Poetry explores `The End of the Poem' : A poem written in Oxford 79 years ago to the day was the focus of the inaugural lecture by the University's new Professor of Poetry, Professor Paul Muldoon.

Royal Society awards: The Council of the Royal Society has presented the following awards and medals for 1999 to Oxford academics: Sir Jack Baldwin, FRS, Waynflete Professor of Chemistry, has been awarded the Leverhulme Medal in recognition of his distinguished contributions to the field of organic chemistry; and Professor David Godfrey Pettifor, FRS, Isaac Wolfson Professor of Metallurgy, has been awarded the 1999 Royal Society Armourers and Brasiers' Company award for excellence in materials science and technology, and for his vision and leadership in establishing the Materials Modelling Laboratory at Oxford.
