"We will then be conducting the entrance exam jointly. If none of the IITs join us we will be conducting exam for 840 seats of the institute and remain restricted to ourselves", said the member of the admission commission further.

The IIT-Kanpur will be conducting its own entrance exam in 2013 which would exactly be on the pattern of Joint Entrance Exam-2012. The decision in this regard was taken at the meeting of the Under-graduate Admissions Committee headed by Prof Neeraj Mishra on Wednesday. This was the first ever meeting of the newly constituted committee held at IIT-Kanpur. This committee was formed by the members of the academic senate which met at IIT-K on June 8.

It was also deliberated that the committee will also organise the counselling for the students and deal with other important matters pertaining to the Under-graduate admissions in 2013. Also, to the extent possible, the committee will also co-ordinate with other IITs to conduct the entrance examination jointly.

The members of the committee including Prof YN Mohapatra, Prof Harish Karnick, Prof CS Upadhyay, Prof YN Singh, Prof ID Dhariyal, Prof Sarvesh Chandra, Prof Goutam Deo and Prof Sudhir Misra deliberated during the meeting as to how to go ahead in terms of holding IIT-Kanpur's separate entrance exam in 2013.

The Under-graduate Admissions Committee also decided that they would be writing a letter to Director, IIT-Kanpur, Prof SG Dhande requesting him to contact other IIT Directors so as that if their senate decides to join IIT-Kanpur in conducting own entrance test and not participating in Common Entrance Test (CET) as proposed by Ministry of HRD, then they are welcome.

The alumni association also resolved that a fresh look at the situation be taken immediately and efforts be made to work out a strategy keeping in view the interests of all concerned. Also, the hastily arrived at decision for such a major change be withdrawn, and a proposal arrived at after discussions be implemented only from the year 2014.

The Association strongly endorses the view that the admission process at IITs must be left to IITs to decide. This is the only way to maintain autonomy of IITs.

The IIT Kanpur Alumni Association resolved that it is strongly opposed to IIT Council's proposal of change in admission process to IITs.

The Alumni of the premier IIT Kanpur have also rendered their complete support to the faculty forum of the institute about conducting its own entrance exam in the year 2013. The Alumni Association of IIT-Kanpur passed a resolution on Tuesday and decided to support the cause.

The Gymkhana students want that the IIT council and the MHRD should take into the consideration the suggestions put forward by the faculty members of the institute.

So, we decided we will not abide by that and what we have done is that we will conduct our exam similar to the exam last time. Now for children who may be confused that how many exams they will have to give, we have also decided that we will get in touch with other IITs, who would not like to follow the Council's resolution and we will join hands with them and have an exam together with them
