Huge queues at Nuneaton's McDonald's drive-thru saw police called three times yesterday over concerns for safety (June 3).

Officers were forced to close the junction of St David's Way and the Griff Island yesterday afternoon, and were later called over a crash between two cars in the queue.

The queues for the newly re-opened drive-thru have now prompted a danger warning from police - and calls for people not to join them.

Inspector Dave Williams, from the Nuneaton and Bedworth Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT), said: “We received reports of queues of traffic at Bermuda Park backing up to the A444 and causing a danger.

"I would like to remind people that this is a fast road and that stopping on it to queue unnecessarily could cause a serious accident.

"If there is a queue please consider coming back later or using an alternative restaurant.”

Three calls

At 12.06pm, Warwickshire Police was called about the queues stretching back to nearly the A444 and concerns around it being dangerous.

A road block was put in place to prevent build up of traffic.

Officers were called again at 6.50pm about queuing traffic for McDonald's causing traffic problems for other vehicles. Traffic was backing up on to A444.

Then, at just before 8pm, police were to called to a report of a collision involving a van, Focus and a Ciat in the queue. Fortunately there were no injuries and the cars were recovered.

Traffic is beginning to snake onto the Griff Island as people queue for a McDonald's

Yesterday morning, CoventryLive reported that queues were building in the area after the drive-thru was re-opened after being closed for months.

Staff, kitted out in PPE, were walking along the queue, talking to customers.

The eatery, alongside others across the country, closed on Monday, March 30 due to the government lockdown.

Residents were in a 'McHurry' to get their last Big Macs before the shutters were closed.

Opening times

The Nuneaton Asda and the Queens Road branches remain closed.

And the Bermuda Drive-thru is not open 24 hours, its hours are from 11am and until 10pm.

There is a limited menu on offer which means you will not be able to buy breakfast, any wraps or milkshakes. There will also be a maximum order spend of £25 to encourage customers to use contactless payment.

"These measures are temporary to assist social distancing for employee and customer safety and to help with speed of service as I expect there will be very high demand initially," the franchisee explained.
