What if we saw 💧 water differently? Less than 1% of Earth’s freshwater is available to sustain its 8 billion people. With the water cycle out of balance, Europe’s water systems are under increasing stress. We are experiencing more floods and droughts, and life is disappearing from our rivers and seas. Let's join forces and transform the way water is managed, used and valued. Let’s become #WaterWiseEU Discover how 👉 https://europa.eu/!p6hkwy #WorldWaterDay

The impacts of climatic shocks are already being felt across Europe and are bound to intensify in line with further climate change. These trends call for urgent climate adaptation investment strategies that can prepare countries for a wide range of climate hazards and their complex impacts across communities and economic sectors. A new European Commission and The World Bank report provides insights on how to make climate adaptation efforts bankable and effective, ensuring they protect people and prosperity. Happy #BiodiversityDay! The #BiodiversityPlan is a historic deal for people and #ForOurPlanet, in which 196 countries agreed to protect 30% of land & water by 2030. It provides a 🌍 blueprint to: 🌱 protect & restore nature 🌊 prosper with nature 🤝 share benefits fairly 💰 invest & collaborate for nature Protecting freshwater ecosystems is a crucial part of this effort as the biodiversity crisis impacts them the hardest. More than 50% of all wetlands globally have been lost since 1900, and freshwater vertebrate populations have fallen by 83% since 1970. Healthy ecosystems are at the heart of the water cycle Today and every day, we are committing to being #PartOfThePlan with the #EUGreenDeal, and becoming a #WaterWiseEU 👉 https://europa.eu/!kVRHN7

The Water challenge unites us. The 10th World Water Forum triggered the positive, forward looking spirit that galvanises water cooperation we urgently need 10th World Water Forum (WWF), co-hosted by the World Water Council & this year’s host #Indonesia, managed to keep up the water momentum of last year’s #UNWaterConference in NY. The #10WWF ministerial declaration demonstrates leadership, heightened awareness and a shared resolve to go „water efficiency first“. The overall theme of the #10WWF is „water for shared prosperity“. Amidst growing division and geopolitical tensions we need to advance the global uptake on priority issues such as -integrated water resource management (#IWRM) -water-energy-food-ecosystem nexus (#WEFE) and -transboudary water cooperation The #EU is active internally and globally on all these strands. Therefore the EU and it’s MS were able to endorse the final Ministerial Declaration which correctly also refers to the strong commitments already taken under the #UNWaterActionAgenda, #UNEA6 resolution, #GlobalBiodiversityFramework, UNFCCC and the #SendaiFrameworkforDisasterRiskReduction. I feel privileged that I have been actively engaged for the EU in all of these agreements over the past years. More and more it is understood that tackling water-related challenges requires an integrated approach that addresses climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution together. Hence we ought to mainstream this holistic approach into all actions and funding decisions ; so as „not to do harm“. Water stress has become a systemic risk. Conservation, protection and sustainable management of our fragile ecosystems is simply a „must do“ for all of us - which was firmly stated here in Bali. Nature based solutions (#NbS) can go hand in hand with innovation and new technologies. And as the need for desalination will rapidly rise with cheaper renewable energy available we need to scale up research on how to minimise and recycle the residues. In the same vain the Freshwater Challenge which is part of the #WaterActionAgenda is getting traction. Happy to tell that it is also endorsed by the EU. It comprises many commitments but it basically means that the coalition of willing states will protect and restore 300.000km of rivers and 350 mio ha of wetlands-the largest restoration goal on freshwater. It mirrors the #GBF target of 30x30x30. Our #NatureRestorationLaw would make the EU a credible partner to the global south, demonstrating that we have no double speak but walk the talk. I was honoured to have represented the #EU at #WWF delivering on our opening statement & keynotes at HL segments and panels. The forward looking mood was a welcome change to other ongoing MEA discussions where political division preempts deeper engagement on solutions. The WWF creates expectations for the next #UNWaterConference in 2025 hosted by #Senegal & #UAE. denis chaibi Henriette Færgemann Dagmar BEHRENDT KALJARIKOVA Luis Planas Herrera

Not so happy #WorldBeeDay: 1 in 3 bee, butterfly and hoverfly species is in decline. More shockingly: Around 4 out of 5 crop and wild flowering plant species depend on animal pollination. And you know: no pollinators, no food. With the #EUPollinators Initiative, we are working to protect all bees and pollinators and reverse their decline, something that’s being fuelled by the climate and environmental crises: https://europa.eu/!6PymrM Let's protect our pollinators.
