The 12th edition of PwC's Energy Deals report which is the annual analysis of mergers and acquisitions in the Turkish energy market is published.
The Energy Deals 2019 report includes mergers and acquisitions in 2019 and developments awaiting the sector in 2020. 22 mergers and acquisitions were realized in the energy sector in 2019 which generated an estimated value of 600 million USD in total, with a 61% decrease from US$ 1.52 billion in 2018.
In 2019, for the first time since 2008, no privatisation took place in Turkey's energy market, all mergers and acquisitions took place among private sector players. The report highlighted that the worsening trading conditions for the gas-fired power plants and the narrowing window for coal-fired power plant financing made the renewable energy assets better acquisition targets.
For 2020 expectations, it was stated that the adoption of a market-oriented approach has an important role in addressing the results of potential IPOs and to correct the inaccuracies in regulation.
