Open source breakthrough for climate-smart investing

About us

Linux Foundation OS-Climate (OS-C) is a breakthrough initiative creating a transparently governed public utility of open data and open source tools for climate-aligned finance investing, business, and regulation. OS-C use the open collaboration approach that delivered rapid COVID vaccines, applying that to solve data gaps now blocking rapidly scalable transition of capital toward a resilient Net Zero economy. OS-C’s Asset Owner, Asset Manager, Bank, Tech, Financial Data, and “real economy’ corporate members are Airbus, Allianz, Amazon, BNP Paribas, BNY Mellon, EY, Federated Hermes, Goldman Sachs, KPMG, London Stock Exchange Group, Microsoft, the Net Zero Asset Owner Alliance (pension funds and insurance companies with $10 trillion in assets), Ortec Finance, Red Hat, and S&P Global. NGO and academic Members include CPI, Open Climate Foundation, Polytechnique, and World Benchmarking Alliance. OS-C’s Planning Team includes WWF, SASB (now Value Reporting Foundation), and Ceres. Members contribute their data scientists, modelers, and software developers to cooperative projects building the OS-C Data Commons, a federated library of libraries of corporate and factor data, plus analytics tools to derive the actionable metrics crucial for asset allocation, portfolio construction, security analysis, credit analysis, corporate engagement, strategic planning and transition investment by corporates, and financial sector supervision.

Thank you Muhammed Muhammed Sani and team for participating in the Sustainable Africa Initiative's Climate Risk Research Challenge (https://lnkd.in/gx_J6ciW). We are very excited to review your project along with many other project submissions from 10 Nigerian Universities. The goal of the Challenge is to provide capacity building in the form of financial awards, training, open-source software tools (e.g., Physical Risk & Resilience from OS-Climate), and donated cloud infrastructure from Amazon Web Services (AWS) for leading African universities and their students. With these resources, we envision the establishment of a grassroots movement led by African climate scientists and engineers who perform localized and on-going analysis of the climate-related risks on crops, food security and agriculture supply chains. We look forward to seeing Africa's best & brightest lead their communities in developing #climatemitigation and #climateadaptation plans. We plan to announce the winners of this first Climate Risk Research Challenge at #COP28! Good luck to all participants! #SustainableAgriculture #ResilienceBuilding #Nigeria #ClimateChange #FoodSecurity #opensource #opensourcesoftware #africa #climateadaptation

🌾 Enhancing Resilience in Nigeria’s Agriculture Sector: A Milestone Achievement 🌾 I am thrilled to announce the successful completion of my latest project, “Enhancing Resilience in Nigeria’s Agriculture Sector: Developing Physical Risk Models and Climate-Smart Strategies for Sustainable Farming.” This project has been a significant step towards addressing the impact of climate change on Nigeria’s agricultural industry. Climate change poses a grave threat to Nigeria’s agriculture, jeopardizing food security and the livelihoods of millions of farmers. With changing weather patterns, extreme events, and dwindling natural resources, it has become imperative to develop innovative solutions that enhance resilience and promote sustainable farming practices. Through this project, we have developed physical risk models that assess the vulnerability of Nigeria’s agriculture sector to climate change impacts. These models provide valuable insights into the potential risks and help identify areas that require immediate attention and intervention. By understanding these risks, we can implement targeted strategies to mitigate their effects and build a more resilient agricultural system. One of the key outcomes of this project is the development of climate-smart strategies for sustainable farming. These strategies integrate climate change considerations into agricultural practices, ensuring that farmers can adapt to changing conditions while minimizing environmental impact. By promoting climate-smart agriculture, we can enhance productivity, conserve natural resources, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This project would not have been possible without the collaboration and support of various stakeholders, including government agencies, research institutions, farmers, and local communities. Their invaluable contributions and commitment to sustainable agriculture have been instrumental in achieving our goals. I would also like to express my gratitude to the funding organizations Brendan Reilly Climate Risk Research Foundation OS-Climate Heather Ackenhusen and partners Tony O. Elumelu, C.F.R Green Energy Mission Africa who recognized the importance of addressing climate change in Nigeria’s agriculture sector. Their support has enabled us to carry out this vital work and make a positive impact on the lives of farmers and the future of our nation. Moving forward, it is crucial that we continue to prioritize resilience-building measures and implement the strategies developed through this project. I invite all professionals, policymakers, and stakeholders to join hands in supporting and implementing these climate-smart strategies. Together, we can create a more sustainable and resilient agriculture sector in Nigeria, ensuring food security, economic growth, and a brighter future for generations to come. #ClimateSmartFarming #SustainableAgriculture #ResilienceBuilding #Nigeria #ClimateChange #FoodSecurity AGRI GROWTH AFRICA (AGA) UNDP Rome Centre FAO
