Georgia voted on a United Nations General Assembly resolution on Wednesday to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, joining 140 other countries in the vote.
The resolution demands that the Russian Federation “immediately, completely and unconditionally” withdraw all of its military from the territory of Ukraine “within its internationally recognized borders.”
The voting on the resolution also saw five nations choose to vote against it, with 35 abstaining.
“The message of the General Assembly is loud and clear: End hostilities in Ukraine now. Silence the guns now. Open the door to dialogue and diplomacy now. The territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine must be respected in line with the UN Charter,” Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said.
While legally non-binding, the resolution carries political weight globally.
