Hey, There's Science In This: Essays about science in unexpected places Kindle Edition

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 4 ratings

Hey, There's Science In This is a collection of essays about unexpected science links to everyday topics. Rubber ducks at sea, a Japanese TV show or food-based paint techniques don't seem to have much to do with science at first glance, but Eva Amsen finds an amusing science story in all of them. In twenty-four short essays she takes an approachable and humorous look at the connection between hot springs and genetics, the psychology behind your study playlist, hiking trail geology and much more.

Reading this book will make you look at the world in a different way and is bound to have you say, "hey, there's science in this!"

“Hey, There's Science In This” by Dr. Eva Amsen is a fun, non-fiction book of stories for the science nerd lurking in all of us. The book begins with an exploration of rubber ducks who escaped from a cargo ship and began showing up in Alaska. Their journey intrigued a scientist who used their travels to investigate ocean currents. I remember those escaped rubber ducks in the news, so it was fun for me to read about them. As the book’s introduction explains, the chapters are posts pulled from the author’s 16+ years of blogging, which she began while a PhD student. Each of Dr. Amsen’s essays is intriguing and written in an easy-to-understand style that non-scientists can readily grasp. Ms. Amsen’s sense of humor comes through in her writing, which makes this a fun read for the masses. You’ll learn things without even realizing! The book’s interesting facts are great conversation starters to the “So what have you read lately?” question. This book is also a must for school libraries and households with teens interested in science because of its light, easy to understand style. In addition to the chapter about the rubber ducks, I especially enjoyed learning about peanut scientist Dr. George Washington Carver’s early career as an artist, and the intriguing Manhattanhenge seasonal sunlight effect on skyscrapers. In the chapter about the Appalachian trail, Dr. Amsen compares her experience with that of Bill Bryson in “A Walk in the Woods,” a book I absolutely loved. It was fun learning that she enjoyed it as well. This book would make an excellent airplane-trip read: a couple of chapters waiting in the airport, a couple more on the flight, more waiting for your connecting flight. You can’t go wrong with this entertaining, non-fiction read.

Hey, There's Science In This: Essays about science in unexpected places was a pretty fun read. It takes basically small stuff like how in one section (where it talked about late night Japanese anime) there was a part about whether people wanted to learn about animals in the zoo and used search information about what animals people were looking up. Eventually, it turned out certain volumes of information were higher near zoos where those animals were showed, but suddenly had searches double. It turned out that due to an anime known as Kemono friends, the resultant stuff like manga, game, and anime had caused an explosion in searches that had made the results explode as well. Plus, it ended up inspiring people to donate to wildlife conservations and stuff, so it did a lot of good for that too. If you want cool little factoids like this and stories associated with them, than this is a pretty good book and a definite recommend from me!

I really enjoyed reading this collection of essays about science - the range of topics covered is wide, and they're written with warmth and humour. Many of the essays make you want to read further into certain topics, or to think more broadly about everyday occurrences: I liked reading about the science behind why some sounds are scarier than others, and about why there aren't really many pop songs about science but several well-loved songs that allude to science. All in all, an entertaining and thought-provoking read.
