Elites

The present work aims at offering an overview of the main educational and didactic institutions where most part of the Sicilian élite was educated in the time frame ranging from the second half of the XVIIIth century, immediately after the expulsion of the Company of Jesus from the island in November 1767, to the Italian Unification in 1861. In greater detail, the institutions here examined had been founded in Sicily either by the Bourbonic government, by religious congregations, by public corporations or by private citizens thanks to donations or charitable bequests. The research was carried out through the analysis of miscellaneous documents, both published and unpublished, kept in various Sicilian district archives as well as in the State Archive of Naples, such as: the instructions forwarded by “major” and “minor” royal institutes, by colleges or by private boarding Schools; the pertaining school curricula; the textbooks adopted throughout the years; the public end of the school’s pamphlets; a rich correspondence mainly including the applications sent by the aspiring students' fathers to school committees in the hope of having their heirs admitted. By means of examining the above-mentioned sources, this study intends to evaluate the didactic and educational pathways available in Sicily and to paint a picture of the different educational institutions operating on the Sicilian island, thus producing an “identikit” of the Sicilian ruling class between the XVIIIth and the XIXth century. A special focus has been put on the analysis of the schools specifically “designed” for the education of the élite in the three main Sicilian cities, namely Palermo, Catania and Messina, all hosting royal institutes, renowned academies and universities.

This thesis focuses on the study of the material culture of the Auguste, a cartel ship wrecked in 1761 northeast of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. The Seven Years’ War (1756-1763) in New France entailed the surrender of Louisbourg in 1758, Quebec in 1759, and finally, Montreal in 1760. France consequently lost an important colony. The establishment of a temporary British military regime caused the departure of many members of higher social classes from the colony towards France. To this end, ships were requisitioned and travelled as cartel ships, in other words, they navigated to France under a white flag with the “prisoners”,
their families, and their possessions. In 1761, three departures from Québec City occurred in May, July, and October. The Auguste, a British merchant ship, was requisitioned in Quebec as a cartel ship during the fall of 1761. A month after its departure, the ship grounded in Aspy
Bay and wrecked, bringing death to the majority of the passengers. More than two centuries later, a partnership between Parks Canada and local divers led to two archaeological excavations in the late 1970s, revealing a collection of over four thousand artefacts. This thesis’ analysis of the material culture includes an outline of the history and the discovery of the ship and a classification of artefacts along functional categories related to maritime archaeology. The different analytical steps in this study ultimately lead to the integration of archaeological data towards understanding the repatriation of elites within the Modern State, and to define relationships between the wealthiest families of the colony and certain artisans of New France. The study of the Auguste finally seeks to understand the function of a cartel ship and the maritime organisation of a passengers ship’s transatlantic voyage.

Ce mémoire porte sur l’étude de la culture matérielle de l’Auguste, un navire de cartel ayant fait naufrage en 1761 au nord-est de l’île du Cap-Breton, en Nouvelle-Écosse. La date de 1759 marque la conquête de la Nouvelle-France par l’Angleterre. La France perd donc un important territoire. À la suite de la capitulation de Montréal en 1760, un Régime militaire temporaire anglais est mis en place et entraîne le départ de plusieurs membres des classes dirigeantes de la colonie vers la France. Leur rapatriement est effectué au moyen de navires de cartel, c’est-à-dire des vaisseaux voyageant sous drapeau blanc et transportant des
« prisonniers », leur famille et leurs avoirs. L’Auguste, un navire marchand d’appartenance britannique, est réquisitionné à Québec comme navire de cartel à l’automne 1761. Un mois après son départ, le navire s’échoue dans la baie d’Aspy et fait naufrage en emportant à la
mort la majorité des passagers. Plus de deux siècles après ces événements tragiques, un partenariat entre Parcs Canada et des plongeurs locaux a mené à la réalisation de deux campagnes de fouilles archéologiques à la fin des années 1970 mettant au jour une collection
de plus de quatre mille artefacts. L’analyse de cette culture matérielle comprend notamment la mise en contexte de l’histoire et de la découverte du navire et un classement des artefacts selon des catégories fonctionnelles liées à l’archéologie maritime. Les différents niveaux analytiques mènent ultimement à l’intégration des données archéologiques dans la compréhension du rapatriement des élites au sein de l’État moderne et à l’établissement de liens intéressants entre les familles nanties de la colonie et certains artisans de Nouvelle-
France. L’étude de l’Auguste a finalement permis de mettre en lumière la fonction de cartel du navire et d’établir et l’organisation maritime d’un voyage transatlantique pour le transport de passagers.

El tema de las elites ha sido controversial en las ciencias sociales
latinoamericanas. Se les ha estudiado indirectamente como terratenientes,
capitalistas, líderes empresariales o políticos y, también,
fueron abordadas directamente utilizando conceptos y teorías de
los estudios de la elite. Aunque existe una cantidad significativa de
literatura sobre el papel de las elites en las transformaciones democráticas
(ver, por ejemplo, Highley y Gunther, 1992), a menudo las
elites han sido consideradas como un obstáculo para la formación
de sociedades más democráticas, prósperas e igualitarias (ver, por
ejemplo, Paige, 1997; Cimoli y Rovira, 2008). Este también es el
caso de la literatura sobre gobernanza ambiental, en el cual los grupos
de elite a menudo son considerados como un obstáculo para el
desarrollo sostenible y para establecer un enfoque más equitativo
sobre el uso y aprovechamiento de los recursos naturales. Por lo
tanto, a pesar de que en América Latina haya existido un movimiento
de conservación elitista, desde hace mucho tiempo, las luchas
para proteger el medio ambiente de la sobreexplotación y la contaminación
estuvieron invariablemente relacionadas con las luchas a de grupos subalternos contra las elites locales, nacionales y transnacionales
(Carruthers, 2008; Martínez-Alier, 2002; y los capítulos 2
y 3 de este libro).
En la última década, han ocurrido en América Latina una serie
de cambios que podrían tener cierto impacto en la composición y
las actitudes de las elites. Estos cambios podrían tener consecuencias
para la gobernanza ambiental en el sentido amplio del concepto,
como se indica en el primer capítulo de este volumen. De las
49 elecciones presidenciales en el período 2003-2013, 22 fueron ganadas
por candidatos de centroizquierda y, a excepción de México
y Colombia, durante la mayor parte de este período, los gobiernos
de centroizquierda ascendieron al poder en todas las grandes economías
en América Latina (Bull, 2014). Muchos de estos gobiernos
representan grupos que habían sido marginados de la política y confrontado
a las elites, incluyendo los movimientos indígenas y socioambientales.
Con los cambios en la economía política global, entre
los que se incluyen el avance de China y varias economías emergentes,
América Latina presenció el ingreso de una serie de nuevos actores
económicos, incluyendo nuevas compañías transnacionales y
nuevos prestamistas. Por otra parte, en los sectores clave las nuevas
tecnologías cambiaron la estructura de la producción y, por tanto,
también la concentración de los recursos –y a su vez, posiblemente la composición de las elites.
A pesar de estos cambios, se disipó el optimismo inicial con respecto
a las implicancias para la gobernanza ambiental. En 2010, el
ecologista Eduardo Gudynas les preguntó retóricamente a los nuevos
gobiernos: ¿si son tan progresistas, por qué destruyen el medio
ambiente? (Gudynas, 2010). Subsecuentemente, fueron formuladas
numerosas y variadas preguntas acerca de por qué los gobiernos que
rechazaron públicamente la agricultura genéticamente modificada
luego la promovieron; por qué aceleraron la licitación de las concesiones
mineras a pesar de las protestas de sus propios electores; o por
qué se ampliaron la extracción y explotación petrolera en áreas vulnerables
a pesar de las promesas proteccionistas.
El objetivo de este capítulo es iluminar la dinámica de las elites,
para dar respuestas a algunas de las preguntas señaladas anteriormente.
Basado en material empírico de seis estudios del caso, este
capítulo examina los cambios de las elites , esbozando la forma en que
surgieron las nuevas elites, cómo las viejas elites continuaron influyendo
en la política y la economía y, cómo la relación entre las nuevas
y viejas elites ha afectado la gobernanza ambiental en la región.

As questões esboçadas pela crise política brasileira desafiam muito os esquemas analíticos que vêm sendo usados para o estudo do protagonismo
político das instituições judiciais no Brasil e mesmo, em maior escala, nos países latino-americanos. Pode-se afirmar que uma compreensão mais profunda das diferentes lógicas políticas que perpassam as instituições judiciais
no Brasil e, mesmo nos países latino-americanos, tem como desafio ir além, tanto dos indicadores comparativos de “bom funcionamento das instituições”, quanto das diferentes versões da história política oficial. No primeiro caso, a comparação tende a ocorrer a partir de métricas abstraídas de contextos muito distantes que subsidiam com freqüência pacotes de reformas mobilizados pelas “elites modernizantes” nas disputas políticas locais. No segundo caso, fica-se refém do “efeito da forma” que implica em estudar as “instituições” a partir dos formatos legais e na sua interpretação oficial dada pela ciência produzida pelos atores do jogo político ou judiciário. Ou seja, atribuir-se o incremento das lógicas que perpassam tanto as disputas no interior do campo jurídico, quanto a relação com o poder político apenas a um “efeito de instituição”, por exemplo. Uma análise interpretativa da legitimidade das intervenções do poder judiciário no jogo político implica em incluir como dimensão fundamental o imbricamento das diferentes lógicas que cercam os episódios de hiper-ativismo que podem ameaçar regimes democráticos.

El objetivo de este artículo es en primer lugar, reflexionar sobre el rol de las elites en los territorios, a través de la producción de poder, la generación de identidad, la confección de fronteras internas y externas y la construcción de Estado. En segundo término, este artículo constata dicha reflexión y pone en evidencia la importancia de las elites provinciales, alejadas del centro político-administrativo del país, como lo fue la elite de Osorno durante los siglos XIX y principios del  siglo XX. Finalmente, ejemplificamos el rol de esta elite en un territorio particular, dando cuenta del accionar de tres familias de elite en Osorno, demostrando cómo sus prácticas influyen e impactan en el desarrollo del territorio austral del país.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to contribute to a critical approach of the identification and rejection strategies in discourses and practices of a “global elite” of business leaders and managers. Design/methodology/approach – A literature review of mainstream and more critical management and sociology literature on global or transnational elites and classes is presented. The identification and rejection discursive strategies of some (French) multinational corporations’ managers and internationalization agents are then empirically and qualitatively observed and analyzed. Findings – The findings are interpreted under the following strategies: constructive strategies, reproductive and legitimizing strategies and exclusion strategies. Some members of the global elite deploy a cosmopolitan and welcoming discourse to not only identify legitimate members of that class but also turn this discourse into one of exclusion, that is, find ways through language, and practice, to exclude ...

En nombre de todo el equipo docente del Máster en Genealogía, Heráldica y Archivos de la Universidad de Córdoba nos complace enormemente anunciar una nueva edición de nuestro programa de estudios, una vez más, bajo la dirección del profesor Enrique Soria Mesa, catedrático de Historia Moderna y director del Laboratorio de Estudio Judeoconversos.

Una titulación universitaria que cuenta con un total de 60 créditos ECTS, que equivalen a 1.500 horas lectivas, distribuidas en 562,5 horas de teoría y 562,5 horas de prácticas, más el correspondiente Trabajo Fin de Máster, de 375 horas (15 créditos ECTS).

Su carácter eminentemente práctico, gracias a la docencia virtual, hace que sea un programa de estudios accesible a interesados y especialistas de todo el mundo, independientemente de husos horarios y lugares de residencia. El único requisito para cursar dicha propuesta académica es estar en posesión de un título de grado, licenciatura, ingeniería o similares.

La duración del Máster es de casi dos años. Comenzará el día 8 de enero de 2020 y finalizará el 30 de septiembre de 2021. Los plazos de matriculación constarán de dos periodos:

• Un periodo de preinscripción que va entre el 1 de octubre y el 31 de noviembre de 2019.
• Y un periodo de matriculación que abarca desde el 1 de noviembre al 20 de diciembre de 2019.

El precio de dicha titulación es de 2.500 euros, los cuales pueden abonarse de manera fraccionada hasta en cuatro plazos de 625 euros. Esto significa que el valor de cada crédito ECTS es de 41,60 euros.

Resumo: O presente artigo propõe-se analisar a atuação de Mendes Leal (1819-1886) no tempo em que foi redator principal de A América, uma revista mensal, sem fins lucrativos, editada em Lisboa, entre 1868 e 1871, que se posicionava como órgão defensor, junto dos poderes públicos, dos interesses dos emigrantes portugueses no Brasil. O nosso objetivo é compreender impacto que Mendes Leal assumiu na vida desta revista e as suas motivações, através do cruzamento da sua trajetória individual com o conteúdo da revista. Atende-se à ligação estreita entre A América e a Correspondência de Portugal, um quinzenário noticioso que a suportou e promoveu. O presente artigo mostra como Mendes Leal integrou os seus vários papeis/dimensões: escritor, jornalista, político e maçon. A imprensa permitia-lhe, enquanto autor consagrado reforçar a sua posição social e reputação. A revista A América funcionou como plataforma para Mendes Leal partilhar o seu modo de pensar (tribuna política) e aumentar a sua rede de influência. Enquanto maçon, tratava-se de um meio a partir da qual Mendes Leal intervinha no " mundo profano ". O presente artigo visa compreender melhor a vida e obra de Mendes Leal e aumentar o conhecimento atual acerca das motivações individuais e coletivas que envolviam a imprensa portuguesa oitocentista. Abstract: This paper proposes to analyze Mendes Leal's actions (1819-1886) while he was editor-in-chief of A América, a monthly non-profit magazine, published in Lisbon between 1868 and 1871. It positioned itself as a periodic that defended the interests of the Portuguese emigrant community in Brazil towards the public powers. Our aim is to understand the impact of Mendes Leal in the magazine and to explore his motivations, by crossing his individual trajectory with the content of the magazine. We attend to the close connection between A América and Correspondência de Portugal, a biweekly newspaper that supported and promoted it. The present paper shows how Mendes Leal integrated his different roles/dimensions: writer, journalist, politician and freemason. The press allowed him, as a renowned author, to strengthen his social position and reputation. The magazine A América functioned as a platform for Mendes Leal to share his way of thinking (political tribune) and to increase his network of influence. As a freemason, this was used to intervene in the "profane world." This paper aims to contribute to better understand the life and work of Mendes Leal and to extend the existing knowledge about the individual and collective motivations that involved the nineteenth century Portuguese press.

These poems, composed in Somali and in English, provide a poetic reflection of the recently emerged debate on the theme of Caddaan Studies which means "White Studies". The criticism and counter-criticism contained in the debate dug so deep into life nerve of Somali Studies that over a thousand people participated. The poems, under the title "Inaugurating Caddaan Studies" were composed with a critical observation of the debate.

Auch dreißig Jahre nach der Wiedervereinigung sind Ostdeutsche mit 10,1 Prozent seltener in Elitepositionen vertreten, als es ihrem Anteil von 19,4 Prozent an der Bevölkerung entspräche.
Zwischen einzelnen gesellschaftlichen Bereichen gibt es dabei große Unterschiede. In der Politik sind Ostdeutsche ihrem Anteil an der Bevölkerung entsprechend gut in Elitepositionen vertreten. In Wirtschaft und Wissenschaft, Justiz und Verwaltung sowie in Kultur und Medien sind sie hingegen stark unterrepräsentiert.
Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund (MMig) sind mit 9,2 Prozent noch seltener in Elitepositionen vertreten, als es ihrem Anteil von 26 Prozent an der Bevölkerung entspräche. Auch hier gibt es große Unterschiede zwischen verschiedenen gesellschaftlichen Bereichen – allerdings andere Unterschiede als bei Ostdeutschen. So sind Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund in den Bereichen Religion und Kultur kaum bzw.
nur leicht unterrepräsentiert. Auch in Wirtschaft und Medien sind Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund seltener in Elitepositionen vertreten, als es ihrem Anteil an der Bevölkerung entspräche. Ostdeutsche sind aber noch stärker unterrepräsentiert.

Présentation à l'occasion de la journée d'étude sur les maisons, villages et châteaux du Moyen Âge et de la Renaissance comtoise organisée par l'association Franche-Bourgogne (http://www.franche-bourgogne.fr), à Vallerois-le-Bois (Haute-Saône) le 4 mai 2013

Chinese ethnic tourism has grown rapidly alongside national goals to eradicate poverty by 2020, but not without concern. This study analyzes the rise and evolution of ethnic tourism elites (n = 29) in three minority villages of southwest China. Linking Elite Circulation Theory to ethnographic work in the region since 2013, findings highlight a differentiable conversion of
ethnic tourism and other resources fueling 1) individuals' rise to power, and 2) shifts characterizing elite positioning across political, traditional, economic, and educational fields. The study proposes a framework for understanding elite-led tourism, conceptualizing elite circulation in rural China according to evolving attributes of elite groups competing for increased rights and capital within ethnic tourism systems.

Dartmouth College, a member of the elite Ivy League, was founded in 1769 in Hanover, New Hampshire. Dartmouth is famous for its strong sense of community and tradition. Its traditions arose from the intertwining of history and legend and are often evident in material form in the College's cultural landscape. This paper examines Dartmouth's Old Pine, a purportedly mystical tree from the early days of the College that died in 1895. The preserved stump of the Old Pine subsequently transitioned from a natural feature to a cultural artifact. New traditions grew from the remains of the Old Pine in the form of the Class Day ritual and the erection of Bartlett Tower. The interplay between these artifacts in Dartmouth's landscape contributed to the development of a particular sense of place at the College. Through the years, social changes at Dartmouth generated controversies over class, racism, and exclusion in reference to Class Day, which consequently modified the meanings of the artifacts and rituals traditionally associated with the Old Pine. This paper argues that, despite these changes, old traditions and elements of socioeconomic class remain embodied in Dartmouth's cultural landscape and material culture aids in defining a place identity less evident than the one purported from the College's historical record and folk tradition.

En este trabajo trato de analizar el reposicionamiento político de las élites económicas bolivianas en la última fase del gobierno del Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS), durante la crisis y caída de este gobierno en octubre y noviembre del 2019 y en el contexto actual. El enfoque se centrará en las representaciones institucionales más importantes del empresariado, es decir en las diferentes asociaciones y cámaras clave.

We address a largely neglected issue in contemporary research on cultural class divisions: economic capital and its associated lifestyles and symbolic expressions. Using qualitative interviews, we explore how adolescents from wealthy elite backgrounds, namely students at Oslo Commerce School (OCS), traditionally one of the most prestigious upper-secondary schools in Norway, demarcate themselves symbolically from others. They draw symbolic boundaries against students at other elite schools in Oslo, more characterized by backgrounds with high cultural capital, accusing them of mimicking a 'hipster' style. Within the OCS student body, we describe identity work centring on styles of material consumption and bodily distinctions. The most salient dividing line is between those who manage to master a 'natural' style, where expensive clothes and the desired bodily attributes are displayed discreetly, and those who are 'trying too hard' and thus marked by the stigma of effort. We also show some interesting intersections between class and gender: girls aspiring to the economic elite obey the 'rules of the game' by exercising extensive control over their bodies and adhering to demanding bodily norms for their weight and slimness. Such rules are less evident among the boys, where a lack of discipline, unruliness, hard partying and even fighting constitute parts of the lifestyle valued. This article contributes to the field of cultural stratification, highlighting the importance of the 'hows' of material consumption when expressing elite distinction. It also adds new insight to the research field of elite education by showing how a mastery of 'high-end' consumer culture is involved in fostering favourable dispositions at elite schools.

When Holland and Zeeland were integrated in the Burgundian personal union, the court of the count disappeared in these counties . Instead. a regional administrative machinery was set up. in which the govemor,later called stadholder; was the most important officer.In the first years of Burgundian rule in Holland and Zeeland, the office of stadholder took shape. The office was based on predecessors in both the two counties as well as being modelled after French-Burgundian examples. In Holland and Zeeland the office developed out of a situation of crisis and war and found its final form after an unsuccessful experiment with a non-noble president. The stadholder replaced the count of Holland, that is the Burgundian duke, in allrespects. He was his lieutenant general and the subjects of Holland and
Zeeland regarded him as such. With the court at a distance, the stadholder was the most important link between the duke and his counties . He spoke the language of both the duke and his subjects in Holland and Zeeland. Moreover, he was a trustee of the duke and an expert in matters of justice, war and diplomacy. But he was not only formally the most important link between the regional and the supra-regional administrative level. Through
relationships based on patronage and kinship, nearly all stadholders had strong ties with one or more persons at the court . Fundamentally, the regional administration, and especially the stadholder, was the link between the duke and his subjects. They were the perfect mediators between the Burgundian dukes with their ambitious plans on the one hand and the towns that wanted to keep their independence and privileges without paying too many subsidies, on the other. In a sense they were brokers who could provide their clients access to the patron (the duke). Through their formal and informal relations, they connected the central powers with regional and local interest groups.

For social scientists undertaking critical research on elites in organisational contexts securing access is a challenging exercise that may rely on the use of several access strategies over extended periods. This process is further complicated by the existence of research ethics frameworks that establish boundaries to access strategies, posing dilemmas on how to best balance access needs with a commitment to ethical practices. This article focuses on such dilemmas – or the ‘ethics of access’ – through a reflection on PhD fieldwork during 2016-2017 in Luxembourg spent researching the European Investment Bank. The paper will conclude by calling for an overhaul of existing frameworks in order to foster more research on elites.

Obraz badanego wycinka polskich elit, który wyłania się z przeprowadzonych badań opartych na pogłębionych wywiadach badawczych, analizie litera tury
i prasy oraz dokumentach instytucji eksperckich, jest wielowątkowy. Składają się
na niego obserwacje różnej wagi i o różnej precyzji. Opierając się na zgromadzonym materiale badawczym, zaryzykować można wydestylowanie kluczowej
„opowieści”. Jej głównymi bohaterami są przedstawiciele młodego pokolenia
opozycyjnie nastawionej inteligencji, którzy po 1989 r., ciesząc się wsparciem
niektórych szczególnie istotnych postaci inteligenckiej elity oraz ważnych figur
środowisk emigracji, stworzyli trzon medialno-ekspercko-biurokratycznej infrastruktury związanej z relacjami Polski ze Wschodem.

The role of higher education systems in the formation and reproduction of governing elites, and their countervailing potential for the creation of a more egalitarian, or meritocratic, society, has been an enduring subject of concern, debate and research. Many of these debates are made all the more difficult by our inability to directly compare elite formation systems within and between countries and over time. To resolve these problems, this paper employs elite formation quantitative indices to directly and transparently compare elite formation systems, namely the role of higher education systems in political elite formation over three quarters of a century in two countries. Specifically, the paper compares the influence, exclusiveness and eliteness of the Irish and British higher education systems in the production of their respective governing political elites in the 75 years between 1937 and 2012.

Végeredményben mit is jelentett nemesnek lenni Békés megyében? A 18. században még a megyébe beköltözött nemesek nagy része eltitkolta nemességét vagy nem is igazolta azt. A nemesség igazolása főként a tisztújítások 1828 utáni rendszeressé válásával hozható összefüggésbe, azaz a nemesi jogok érvényesítése a megye politikai életében való aktivizálódással állt összefüggésben, illetve emiatt vált fontossá. A nemesi jogállás ténye majdnem hogy csak ezen a ponton volt lényeges, hiszen a házasságkötésekben és a családi kapcsolatokban – úgy tűnik – ez már kevésbé vagy csak bizonyos körökben számított, azaz a házasságkötések zártsága sokkal jellemzőbb, ha foglalkozás
vagy vagyoni helyzet szempontjából vizsgáljuk. Következésképp a nemesi jogállás jelentősége másodlagos lehetett. Ezek alapján pedig a megyei társadalom nem (csak) rendi határvonalak mentén válaszható szét, illetve csak a nemesség felső szintjén rajzolható meg egy társadalmilag zártabb, területileg pedig exogámiát mutató házasodási kör, ahogy ezt láthattuk a megye elitjénél. A kisnemesek körében a nemesség fontossága úgyszintén nem egyértelmű, hiszen a nemesi jogállás legfőképpen a jogképességet fejezhette ki, a rokoni és baráti kapcsolatokban a nemesség nem kapott kizárólagos szerepet, azaz a nemesi származásnak szintén nem lehetett különösebb súlya. Eszerint a nemesi jogállás leginkább a személyes érdekérvényesítés, illetve pozicionálás tekintetében bírt jelentőséggel, hiszen csak ezekben az esetekben igazolta magát, illetve hivatkozott jogállására egy Békés megyei nemes.
