La couleur n’est pas un élément anodin de la Recherche. Au contraire, elle est l’une des voies d’accès au style de l’écrivain. De la science à la peinture, de la critique d’art à la réflexion philosophique, le rendu chromatique de l’œuvre est questionné à partir des connexions entre Proust et les savoirs sur le chromatisme de son époque. Le but du livre est de montrer que l’ une des solutions données par l’auteur sera la disparition de toute teinte au sein des éléments qui composent la cathédrale du temps. La Recherche est mise en couleur par le biais d’un style délibérément hétéroclite.

Les arts du Japon ont révolutionné l’esthétique du XIXe siècle. Quand il créa en 1872 le mot « japonisme » qui devait s’imposer dans toutes les langues, l’historien de l’art Philippe Burty n’en proposa qu’une définition négative en récusant le critique qui traita son invention de « caprice de dilettante blasé ». L’identification de son contradicteur, Jules-Antoine Castagnary, permet de mieux situer la naissance du « japonisme » dans son contexte littéraire, artistique, savant et politique.
Une autre découverte figure en annexe de cette article : la description par Ernest Chesneau, en 1868, du « jeu japonais » que Marcel Proust associa à l’épisode de la madeleine dans Du côté de chez Swann.

The arts of Japan revolutionized the aesthetics of the 19th century. When, in 1872, he coined the word « Japonisme » which was to become established in all languages, the art historian Philippe Burty offered only a negative definition, challenging the critic who called his invention « the whim of a blasé dilettante ». The identification of his opponent, Jules-Antoine Castagnary, allows us to better situate the birth of « Japonisme » in its literary, artistic, scholarly and political context.
Another discovery is appended to this article: Ernest Chesneau’s 1868 description of the « Japanese paper game » that Marcel Proust associated with the madeleine episode in Swann’s Way.

From the Romantic era onwards music has been seen as the most quintessentially temporal art, possessing a unique capacity to invoke the human experience of time.  Through its play of themes and recurrence of events music has the ability to stylise in multiple ways our temporal relation to the world, with far-reaching implications for modern conceptions of memory, subjectivity, personal and collective identity, and history.  Time, as philosophers, scientists and writers have found throughout history, is notoriously hard to define.  Yet music, seemingly bound up so intimately with the nature of time, might well be understood as disclosing aspects of human temporality unavailable to other modes of inquiry, and accordingly was frequently granted a privileged position in nineteenth-century thought.  For if this age understood time, it was through a melody.
  This book examines the multiple ways in which music may provide insight into the problematics of human time.  Whether in the purported timelessness of Beethoven’s late works or the nostalgic impulses of Schubert’s music, in the use of music by philosophers as a means to explicate the aporias of temporal existence or as medium suggestive of the varying possible structures of time, as a reflection of a particular culture’s sense of historical progress or the expression of the intangible spirit behind the course of human history, each of the book’s chapters explores a specific theme in the philosophy of time as expressed through music.  They chart the development across the course of the nineteenth century of music’s capacity to convey the manifold nuances of time, revealing how music would finally become seen as the ideal instantiation of time and human existence itself.  At once historical, analytical, critical, and ultimately hermeneutic, it provides both fresh insight into many familiar nineteenth-century pieces and a rich theoretical basis for future research.

Cette thèse parle d’Hommes, d’art et de société. Elle traite de l’histoire d’un banquier Juif ashkénaze né à Bonn en 1804 et de ses descendants. À travers l’étude de douze demeures et de leurs collections, elle raconte l’histoire d’une dynastie d’entrepreneurs qui, de l’ancien Ghetto de Bonn – 821 rue des Juifs – rejoignit le sommet de la haute société européenne. Portraiturés par Léon Bonnat, Carolus-Duran et Renoir, Meyer Joseph Cahen d’Anvers et ses enfants Édouard, Emma, Louis, Raphaël et Albert vécurent les conséquences de l’Affaire Dreyfus, s’efforçant d’exprimer la plénitude de leurs droits civils à travers la sociabilité et le mécénat. Dans leurs salons, en ville et à la campagne, les lecteurs croiseront les pas de Guy de Maupassant, Paul Bourget, Marcel Proust et César Franck, ou encore de Gabriele D’Annunzio et Matilde Serao. Proust’s novel À la recherche du temps perdu is translated into English with two
variants of titles: “Remembrance of Things Past”, a phrase which is taken out from
Shakespeare’s Sonnet no. 30, and “In Search of Lost Time” which is the literal translation of
the French title. However, both the titles direct the reader towards a deeper understanding of
time and memory. Shakespeare also in his sonnet laments about “lost time”; however, to
conclude that Proust’s novel is simply a lamentation for the ‘lost time’ is a bit banal and
problematic. The preoccupation with the temporal reality is a typical Proustian thought which
in Swann’s Way, the very first volume of the novel, gains a more complicated understanding
by including Bergsonian configuration of the temporal dimension along with the Einsteinian
theory of relativity

A la recherche du temps perdu, the last great pre-Freudian novel of the mind, has attracted much attention from psychoanalytic critics since its publication. This article explores the analysis of Proust’s novel by critics, with a particular focus on the representation of the conscious and unconscious mind. It follows the history of such criticism through the rise of psychoanalysis in the humanities to the waning of its influence in the early years of the present century. The article argues that our postpsychoanalytic present is the ideal moment to reexamine the parallels and divergences between Proust’s and Freud’s understandings of consciousness and to measure them against the rival philosophical and psychological theories developed during the twentieth century. The current pluralism in the humanities’ approach to analyzing representations of the mind allows the literary author’s implicit understanding of mental life to assert itself more clearly.

Books are not only powerful instruments to disseminate knowledge, but also agents of change. They are sources for joy and personal development as well as inspiration for freedom and democracy, to the extend that they even drive dictators to ban or destroy them. In order to understand better what reading books implies in Marcel Proust’s preface to John Ruskin’s “Sesame and Lilies”, I would like to offer first, as a context, some examples of books in the history of libraries and publishing.

Walter Benjamin utiliza en el Libro de los Pasajes la metáfora de la acción de despertar para explicar la entrada en la modernidad de la sociedad burguesa del siglo XIX. Y pone la obra de Marcel Proust como ejemplo privilegiado de este cambio. Adolf Loos en arquitectura juega un papel similar al de Proust en literatura: despoja los interiores de las casas burguesas de oscuridad y simbolismo.
La arquitectura de Loos incorpora dos rasgos del espíritu moderno: el dinamismo y la simultaneidad. Loos organiza los espacios de sus viviendas con una fuerte teatralidad. La casa se hace con una suma de escenarios simultáneos puestos en relación por juegos de escaleras múltiples y aperturas visuales. La acción de subir o bajar una escalera introduce el dinamismo del que prescindía la casa burguesa del siglo XIX. Las piezas, situadas como pequeños escenarios, convierten a sus habitantes en instantáneos actores de lo cotidiano.



In Das Passagen-Werk, Walter Benjamin uses the awakening metaphor to explain the entry into modernity of the bourgeois society in nineteenth-century. And he indicates the Marcel Proust work as a preferential example of this change. In architecture, Adolf Loos plays a similar role to Proust in literature: he eliminates darkness and symbolism from the interior of bourgeois houses.

Loos’s architecture incorporates two traits of modern spirit: dynamism and simultaneousness. Loos organizes the spaces of his dwellings with a strong theatricality. The house is the sum of simultaneous stages related by multiple sets of stairs and visual openings. The action of going up or down a stair introduces the missing dynamism in bourgeois dwellings of nineteenth-century. The rooms, situated as small stages, transform their inhabitants in instantaneous actors of day-to-day life.

Chez Deleuze Albertine et la Chine sont promues au titre de mondes possibles. Une telle promotion ne trouve son statut conceptuel exact que dans la logique modale mathématisée comme celle de Prior munie des TWA de Geach, qui permet aussi de déceler chez Deleuze l'équivalent d'un modèle de Kripke.

In un’epoca in cui lo studio del romanzo si riduce sempre più spesso all’analisi del plot, la forma è la grande trascurata. Eppure ciò che distingue il romanzo dalla semplice narrativa sembra consistere proprio nella sua possibilità di invenzione compositiva. Da dove attingere allora l’ispirazione di forme nuove se non dalla musica, arte “formale” per eccellenza? Strutturato come una partitura, questo saggio esplora il modo in cui diversi romanzieri del XX secolo hanno rielaborato il principio della variazione su tema, già considerato dai compositori più illustri come la forma delle forme. Se alcuni romanzieri vi hanno rintracciato il modo di trasmettere una percezione disgregata della realtà, autori come Marcel Proust, Danilo Kiš e in particolare Milan Kundera lo hanno tradotto in una forma coerente, capace di conciliare l’aspirazione cosmologica propria dell’arte con lo spirito ironico che contraddistingue il romanzo e di cogliere il codice esistenziale di una particolare categoria di individui: quella dei lettori di romanzi.

Dans les études comparées « droit et littérature » ou « économie et littérature », on cherche souvent en priorité ce que la littérature peut nous apprendre sur le droit ou l’économie. C’est prendre un risque : celui d’oublier la
dimension littéraire des textes étudiés. À plus forte raison, c’est prendre le risque de passer à côté d’un fait précieux, à savoir que la littérature est autre chose qu’un instrument talentueux assigné à la valorisation des thèmes qu’on lui livre : la littérature est plus que cela ! Elle sait elle-même user des autres – en l’occurrence, user du droit et de l’économie comme d’instruments, les mettre à son service. Il n’est pas rare que, ne cherchant pas à représenter ces deux univers, elle les détourne de leurs fins, les vide de leurs fonctions manifestes, mais en conserve mécanismes, raisonnements et vocabulaire : la littérature tire du droit et de l’économie des éléments de poétique qu’elle s’agrège et qui la renforcent, sans qu’elle se soucie de nous apprendre nécessairement quelque chose sur ces deux disciplines, objet de son pillage.

Nel 1940, con lo pseudonimo di Giacomo Marchi, Giorgio Bassani pubblica il suo libro d’esordio, "Una città di pianura". La raccolta comprende cinque racconti composti tra il 1936 e il 1939, periodo cruciale nella biografia dell’autore, di cui essi rappresentano lo specchio: "Omaggio", "Un concerto", "Rondò", "Storia di Debora" con l’appendice lirica "Ancora dei poveri amanti", "Una città di pianura". Il sodalizio con gli amici normalisti (Dessì e Varese), la formazione e le letture, il trauma delle leggi razziali, il contrasto con la borghesia di provincia si intrecciano in una prosa che tenta varie misure, dal frammento lirico alla rievocazione dessiano-proustiana, anticipando toni e temi del futuro narratore. In "Una città di pianura" Bassani seleziona il meglio della sua produzione giovanile: in quegli anni scrive infatti altri racconti, ma sceglie di non inserirli nella raccolta e di lasciarli nel cassetto ("La calunnia", "Viaggio notturno", "Teodoro" e il frammentario racconto lungo "Ottavio e Olimpia"). Testi in parte inediti e qui riprodotti, che consentono di mettere a fuoco la storia di "Una città di pianura" e, insieme, un momento decisivo nella maturazione del giovane Bassani. Alla ricerca di uno stile, l’autore lo costruisce instaurando un dialogo con i modelli, assimilati e riletti: da Flaubert a Rilke, da Delfini a Proust. La nuova edizione di "Una città di pianura", arricchita dagli altri racconti giovanili, si presenta perciò come un’accurata ricognizione nella «preistoria letteraria» e intellettuale di Bassani, tra filologia e critica.

Where does the self stop and the rest of the world begin? Clark and Chalmers already paved the way for an application of the extended mind theory to the problem of selfhood and identity, when in their seminal paper they asked ‘What, finally, of the self? Does the extended mind imply an extended self? It seems so’ (2010: 39). However, how can the self persist in time if it is chiefly constituted by a series of constantly renewed couplings, enactions, and extensions? If the self does persist, what are the processes responsible for the temporal unification and synthesis of what enactivists call different ‘sensorimotor contingencies’ (O’Regan and Noë 2001)? If the self does not persist, what kind of phenomenology and new ontology underlies, or results from, this shift? This essay focuses on these questions as they relate to an extended and enactive view of the self in the space-time trajectory explored in Marcel Proust’s Swann’s Way (2005) – the first volume of In Search of Lost Time. Proust’s work is regarded as the monumental literary research on temporality, self and memory. I will argue, however, that extended and enactive frameworks can provide important new insights on the key claims and findings of Proust’s literary endeavour.

The Aesthetics of Sleep: A study of sleep in Marcel Proust’s A la recherche du temps perdu.
This thesis examines the significance and structuring function of sleep and sleep related instances in Marcel Proust’s A la recherche du temps perdu (la Recherche). From the very first sentence, Longtemps, je me suis couché de bonne heure, toward the final vocation in Le Temps retrouvé the theme of sleep is pervasive throughout the novel. Descriptions of sleep occur on different levels in the narrative and suggest that the study itself should be conducted through various approaches. The thesis is thus organised around three main chapters, each seeking to examine how sleep engages with other crucial topics and adjacent phenomena in la Recherche.
The first chapter, on time and sleep, is concerned with the instability of narrative temporality and how the descriptions of sleep either destabilizes the narration or actually form a narrative pattern, to which the overall structure of the novel adheres. On another level the temporality of sleep, conceived as certain external or biological conditions for measuring time, affect the narration and particularly the narrator. The latter can be seen as a special narrating instance that, in a paradoxical way, manages to describe sleep while it happens, though still largely incapable of grasping the passing of time that occurs in sleep. Ultimately, the insomnia that inflicts the narrator is a disruption of temporality, since it breaks the habitual cycle of sleep.
The second chapter, concerning spatiality and sleep, focuses on various places where sleep occurs, most prominently the bedroom. From the very beginning of the novel, in the first five pages to be exact, the narrator’s bedroom appears as a privileged place where certain perceptual conditions are displayed and experimented with. Throughout the novel, places or settings that involve sleep or sleepers help shape the narrator’s social and artistic experiences. Sleep itself can also to some extent be seen as a necessary boundary or threshold that negotiates between inner and outer modes of perception. Furthermore sleep is often evoked through spatial imagery, for instance when sleep is depicted as a garden that the narrator enters. The reciprocal fashion in which sleep affects space as well as space affects sleep is finally summed up in the term soverum (sleep space).
The final chapter, concerning love and illness, takes its departure in various voyeuristic scenes where the narrator gains crucial insight into the world of love and illness by gazing at the sleeping other. The intermingling of the pathological and the erotic is intensified when the sleeping person is a loved one, such as the narrator’s girlfriend, Albertine. The jealousy that surmounts the narrator in the relationship with Albertine is put into perspective when he observes her sleeping body, and the significance of the sleeping individual as both (spiritually) abandoned and (bodily) available thus informs the narrator’s intermittent reflections on themes of love, jalousy and art. The chapter finally shows how the pathological and erotic share a mutual impulse, namely the interpretation of symptoms or signs that reveals the origin of suffering.
The thesis concludes by addressing, in more general terms, the potential problems involved when studying ‘sleep and literature’.

Il senso del segreto si compone di approfondimenti tematici su cinque filosofi che hanno indagato la questione del segreto e della segretezza, attraverso un confronto – spesso esplicito, talvolta latente – con l’opera di Marcel Proust. Da Walter Benjamin a Georges Bataille, da Maurice Blanchot a Jacques Derrida, passando per Gilles Deleuze, il volume mette in chiaro l’influenza che la Recherche ha esercitato sulla filosofia del Novecento, disegnando anche un affresco sul rapporto tra filosofia e letteratura, due discipline che indagano lo stesso ordine di questioni con voci e consistenze irriducibilmente diverse.

In this chapter, I turn to Deleuze to demonstrate how making sense can become an educational encounter that breaks hierarchies and generates thinking independently of the thinker's knowledge and place in the sociopolitical order. I start with an analysis of the Deleuzian concepts of common sense and good sense, which form the basis of what he calls “the dogmatic image of thought”. I then discuss his concept of sense, and demonstrate that Deleuzian sense can never be common, for it resides not in ordinary, communicable linguistic propositions but rather in the surface between language and world, arising from a problematic encounter with the latter. Next, I address the commonsensical relation between the human faculties to develop Deleuze's notion of thinking as an involuntary, unregulated exercise of the faculties and present his example of learning to swim as a case of education for thinking. Finally, I turn to Deleuze's discussion of Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time to elaborate on how thinking is generated by involuntary encounters with signs and analyze the Proustian search as another example of education for thinking, in which the narrator both learns and makes others think.

Voilà deux célèbres premières phrases de livres ô combien célèbres. Elles ouvrent L’Étranger et Zazie dans le métro. Ce livre en contient quinze autres (plus deux interludes) que Laurent Nunez examine mot après mot. Tout ce que l’on peut deviner d’une œuvre, et de son auteur, n’est-il pas contenu dans « sa » première phrase ?
Aussi instructif qu’ironique, aussi passionnant que savant, ce livre nous parle plus que des livres, il nous parle de l’amour, de la séparation, de la perte, de la vie même. Italo Calvino avait écrit Pourquoi lire les classiques ?, voici le « comment (re)lire les classiques ? » des temps nouveaux.

Dans Tendres Stocks de Paul Morand (1921), on lit qu’à tout solitaire « la voix humaine est nécessaire, comme le diapason de tous les autres sons ». En tant que lieu où s’exerce la parole, la voix est un élément majeur du système des personnages de RTP : des analogies musicales aux fines remarques prosodiques qui ont fait parler d’un Proust « linguiste », des intonations qui permettent de distinguer un idiolecte à la voix en tant qu’avatar du « style », les facettes de la voix chez Proust sont nombreuses et parfois fluctuantes. Au croisement du prosodique et du psychologique, le vocal (Léon), qui semble échapper à toute transcription écrite tout en séduisant le narrateur de RTP, fait alors accéder aux mystères de l’être humain, en incarnant une forme d’« intelligence […] incorporée à la matière » (Préface à Tendre Stocks). Nous montrerons quelques aspects du discours de la voix chez Proust, en particulier dans Le Côté de Guermantes.

The most unusual of Van Dyck’s four portraits of James Stuart is that in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, in which he proffers a fruit. Here identified as a quince, symbol of marriage, it allows the painting to be accurately dated. The portrait has intrigued many artists and writers, notably Marcel Proust.

Les nombreuses références à des œuvres peintes dans A la Recherche du temps perdu témoignent bien des gouts de l'amateur d’art qu'était Proust. Ses connaissances des arts, Marcel Proust les a acquises grâce à ses nombreux amis amateurs érudits et peintres, mais aussi grâce aux livres auxquels il avait eu accès, à ses promenades au Louvre, et enfin à ses voyages, notamment en Italie (en avril 1900 avec sa mère, et en octobre 1900 seul) au cours desquels il découvre Bellini, Giorgione, Tiepolo, Giotto, Mantegna... et Carpaccio. Un épisode de La Recherche porte les traces de ce voyage : après la tragique disparition d'Albertine, Ie héros réalise avec sa mère son projet de visiter Venise. L'épisode de Venise raconte une rencontre primordiale pour Ie narrateur, celle d'un tableau de Carpaccio, Le Patriarche di Grado exorcisant un possédé (II s'agit du tableau qu'on appelle aussi Le Miracle du possédé et qui fait partie de La Légende de la croix, vers 1490, Galerie de l’Académie, Venise).
En raison de sa longueur, de sa richesse et de son intérêt stratégique dans Ie texte de Proust, cette séquence permet une étude intéressante et opératoire des rapports qu'entretiennent littérature et peinture dans La Recherche. S'interroger sur la place qu'occupe la peinture dans A la Recherche du temps perdu c'est réfléchir à Ia manière dont la peinture éclaire Ie texte, se propose comme une voie d'accès au sens. Inversement, on pourrait se demander dans quelle mesure la littérature se présente comme un discours sur la peinture proposant une manière de la voir, autrement dit dans quelle mesure Ie tableau se propose dans Ie texte de Proust comme une ekphrasis.

Résumé
La partie « Nom de pays : le pays » dans À l’ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs se passe en Normandie. Quelle est son importance et quel rôle assume-t-elle dans l’œuvre ? Nous examinerons des passages de certains écrits de Proust et des extraits de la critique proustienne concernant ce sujet. L’objectif est de faire émerger les impressions que cette terre évoque dans l’œuvre proustienne.
En réalité, la Normandie de À l’ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs peut être considérée comme une galerie d’art: un véritable musée d’œuvres impressionnistes représentant les paysages normands. Certains personnages même du roman sont présentés à travers une sorte de regard impressionniste. Pouvons-nous donc parler de Proust comme écrivain impressionniste ?
Dans la partie centrale de notre étude, nous analyserons trois tableaux littéraires tirés de À l’ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs : la description de la Gare Saint Lazare (JFF, p. 6), trait d’union entre Paris et la Normandie, la description d’une falaise normande (JFF, p. 254-255) et la description du Port de Carquethuit (JFF, p. 192-193). Ces passages seront analysés et comparés respectivement à trois tableaux de Monet : La Gare Saint-Lazare, Claude Monet, 1877, (Musée d’Orsay), L’Aiguille et la falaise d’Aval, Claude Monet, 1885, (Massachusetts Musee Giverny) et Bateaux dans le port de Honfleur, Claude Monet, 1866, (Musée Marmottan Monet).
Nous présenterons enfin les résultats des analyses des significations des lieux dans les transpositions littéraires et figuratives « impressionnistes » de Proust et Monet.

La espacialidad como categoría que atraviesa la literatura proustiana y sbarriana es una que convierte al arte en un lugar fronterizo o mejor en un lugar de tránsito, y que por ello se vuelve una potente reflexión sobre la vida humana. Este texto busca entonces trazar puentes entre la propuesta ficcional como reflexión sobre el arte, y esta última a su vez como reflexión sobre la vida humana. Quisiera entonces-casi como un capricho-intentar en primer lugar un tránsito entre dos poéticas literarias, intentar unir de forma bidireccional la poética proustiana y la poética sbarriana, como dos lecturas complementarias. Pero no porque una carezca de lo que otra abunda, sino porque en cierto sentido hipotetizo que llegan a una similar concepción de la obra de arte en tanto creación de un espacio del todo peculiar, un espacio en el que la experiencia de la muerte, del dolor y de la humillación adquieren todo su espesor. Y ello es así porque el espacio que ficcionalizan es un espacio ambiguo, enigmático, que conduce de un lugar a otro, de la ficción a la vida, de la verdad al dolor, del amor a la muerte, pero fundamentalmente, de la ficción al sujeto, al lector que lee, que encontrará allí una puesta en escena de sus propios límites. Para ello primero deberemos ver como sus espacios ficcionales son alegorías de la obra de arte. En principio, de ambas obras podría decirse lo que Adorno señala sobre la obra de Valery, a saber, que se mueven "en la angosta cresta entre configuración estética y la reflexión sobre el arte". Pero que al hacerlo, insisto, sus poéticas se vuelve también un poderoso instrumento (¿óptico?) de reflexión sobre la vida, lo que veremos en segundo lugar. En ambos casos, el de Proust y el de Sbarra estos espacios ambiguos, de tránsito, están dados no sólo por los lugares particulares de las escenas, sino también por el lenguaje que sus personajes despliegan.

For both Merleau-Ponty and Deleuze, time is the affecting of self by self. Yet, the nature of this self-affection, as well as the temporal structure it produces, is fundamentally different in each case. In Merleau-Ponty’s model, the self ’s variations are united by time’s continuous thrust. However for Deleuze, self variation is far more radical. Our self immediately varies from itself: we are always both ourselves and not-ourselves at every singular moment and not just over the course of multiple successive nows. While for Merleau-Ponty our temporal moments are organically integrated with each other, for Deleuze time is composed of a series of caesuras which are like the Dedekind cuts that constitute a numerical continuity. We will examine (1) how Merleau-Ponty’s organic temporality arises from a subject’s continuously integrated personal identity and (2) how in contrast for Deleuze a continuously disjunctive temporality is produced by the personal non-identity of a differentially composed subject. We then evaluate by asking, which model better explains the phenomenon of selfhood, that is, the appearing of oneself to oneself? Building from Deleuze’s elaborations and examples, we conclude that we appear to ourselves most phenomenally when we experience differences in ourselves, like when upon looking in a mirror, we become shocked by an abruptly noticed sign of age that makes us for a moment unable to recognize ourselves.

La publication des Soixante-quinze feuillets de Marcel Proust conduit à relire "Contre Sainte-Beuve". Et la leçon des deux lectures est que, dans l'anamorphose demandée pour comprendre "A la Recherche du Temps perdu", l'édition augmentée de "Proust et les signes",  seule, donne le bon point de vue.
