NWS Issues Special Weather Statement for Early Season Heat this Weekend

High heat special weather statement

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a special weather statement for early season heat for Friday, May 20, through Sunday, May 22.

Temperatures will rise into the 90s this weekend for the first time since last fall, with Saturday forecast to be the hottest day. The abrupt beginning of hot temperatures early in the season after a relatively cool spring brings an increased risk of heat illnesses unless proper precautions are taken for those working or recreating outdoors.

Since many outdoor events are planned this weekend in the region, be aware of the heat, and take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside this weekend.

  • Reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
  • Plan to wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing.
  • Seek shade from the sun.
  • Schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.
  • Stay hydrated with non-alcoholic beverages.

Other Tips and Resources

  • Our Department of Emergency Management and Security has information online about extreme heat, including important terms to know.
  • Our Fire and Rescue Department notes it is important to know the warning signs and symptoms of heat illness and the appropriate responses.

  • Be aware that young children and infants are particularly vulnerable to heat-related illness and death.
  • Remember that is is NEVER safe to leave a child, disabled person or pet locked in a car.

Places To Stay Cool

During extremely hot days, there is plenty that you can do to stay cool, like go to a movie, stroll through a shopping center or visit one of our public buildings when they are open:

Please check the operating hours to ensure the facility is open before arriving.
