This book is outdated, yet it provides useful guidelines for the younger generations to learn from. It is based on research, not opinion.

Any man who wishes to enhance his chances of success in the business world should read and heed the information in this book. It is timeless.

An old classic, still largely relevant. You must not be oversensitive as some of the advice in the book, it's strongly cast in terms of economic class and race. I would say business/society has moved beyond this to an extent, so the rules on "lower middle class" vs "upper middle class" are not as rigid as it was back in 1975 when the book was written. I would say the book is still valuable as many people operate this way subconsciously; it's on you to accommodate their prejudices when you are interviewing, selling, or any other relationship building activity.

Ties get a huge amount of attention in the book. Thing is a lot of businesses now don't expect a tie to be worn; in most cases, I'd wear one and follow his rules if there is any doubt. I did find interesting the commentary that guys in ties seldom get arrested. This is probably true, what a nice easy way to avoid police harassment, if that is a problem for you. Actually when you consider that mug shots of guys never have them wearing ties. Is this cause or effect? Who knows, but interesting nonetheless.

Shoes get short shrift, I do think they are as important as a tie to your outfit, if not more important now, as ties are rarely worn 7 days a week at most workplaces. I would highly recommend as much consideration for your shoes, as now your customer/interviewer is going to be female, they notice shoes a lot more than men do generally. Stick with black on most suits, wear oxfords, not derbys or bluchers. If you are dressing a bit more casual these are OK.

What I do now is pull up images of the CEO of the company you are selling to or interviewing. You can see what is acceptable to the highest levels of the company, you can go a step below it in terms of breaking Malloys rules. My companies CEO wears lime green ties, pink shirts and this is verboten by Malloy's rules. I could then wear a dark green tie most likely and be OK. Keep it conservative; that's the best advice.

Although specific cuts and patterns of clothing have gone out of style his research is still very relevant and his advice is like nothing else I have found. Molloy's advice is based strictly on research, not his own opinions, as so many other work-appropriate clothing advice columns tend to be.

Molloy has saved my bacon on more than one occasion. I love his book and have recommended it to young lads for decades.

I love getting old books for their occasional anachronism but mostly because I think older authors were generally more sensible. This book is a bit anachronistic, but I love its candor. No one today could write about dressing to impress women without some references to faddish fashions and hipsterism of shows like "Sex in the City." Molloy is clearly more grounded in the timely fields of evolutionary biology and neuroaesthetics than those writing today on the same topics he covers. Some specific recommendations may be outdated, and the format is not really adequate to be of practical use as a guide to purchasing, but a fun read nonetheless.

2.0 out of 5 stars It's old

Out of fashion, I bought it out of curiosity to see what it was like in the old days, I would suggest buying a copy of the latest one, it's not worth a penny imo.
