Review

When the imagination of a writer and the passion of a theologian cross-fertilize the result is a novel on the order of "The Shack." This book has the potential to do for our generation what John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress" did for his. It's that good! --Eugene Peterson, Professor Emeritus of Spiritual Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, B.C.

Finally! A guy-meets-God Novel that has literary integrity and spiritual daring. "The Shack" cuts through the cliches of both religion and bad writing to reveal something compelling and beautiful about life's integral dance with the Divine. This story reads like a prayer--like the best kind of prayer, filled with sweat and wonder and transparency and surprise. When I read it, I felt like I was fellowshipping with God. If you read one work of fiction this year, let this be it. --Mike Morrell, zoecarnate.com

"The Shack" is a one of a kind invitation to journey to the very heart of God. Through my tears and cheers, I have been indeed transformed by the tender mercy with which William Paul Young opened the veil that too often separated me from God and from myself. With every page, the complicated do's and don't that distort a relationship into a religion were washed away as I understood Father, Son and Holy Spirit for the first time in my life. --Patrick M. Roddy, ABC News Emmy Award winning producer

William P. Young (Paul) was born a Canadian and along with three younger siblings was raised among a stone-age tribe by his missionary parents in the highlands of what was New Guinea (West Papua). The family returned to Canada where his father pastored a number of churches for various denominations. By the time he entered Canadian Bible College, Paul had attended a dozen schools. He completed his undergraduate degree in religion at Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon.

Powerful and Life Changing for this reader
Read the book years ago, saw the movie now and reread the book. The movie was great for me as I am a visual person. There is so much controversy regarding this book and I get it but we have put God in a religious box and Mr. Young really tore the box apart. This is a gut wrenching, yet life changing read, daring to ask the very tough and authentic questions we have about God and why evil is in the world and why God seems indifferent to our suffering and tragedy. Religion has done much damage in the world's history and done in the name of the God of Christianity. Everyone will have their opinions but mine is that Mr. Young brings us back to the simplicity of the message that God is Love and deeply cares about each of His children, we tend to live in the past or the future and not in the present, which causes all kinds of anxiety, fear and regret and want to be in control of our own lives, until something terribly out of our control comes in, uninvited. It has changed my life for the better, having had an unhealthy fear of God and a lot of religious misteachings in my life. I judged God at a young age that He was not good because of things that happened to me and because of teachings and not only did Mr. Young's personal testimony shake that up but the cave scene with wisdom. Self protection will do that to people ~ use anything to judge others so we can feel better and in some sort of control of our lives. The book will not be for everyone but so many people have resonated with the book and the movie, as have I. It taught me more than reading the bible ever has or going to church ever has and many people would probably tar and feather me for saying that but it is my experience. Thank you Wm Paul Young for sharing the story you wrote to your family with the world!!!
