Delighted to share my new series for The Brookings Institution examining the impact of generative AI on workers and livelihoods. In this first installment of an ongoing storytelling series, I share the stories of 5 Hollywood writers who reflect on AI, what is at stake for their (coveted) careers, what they achieved in their strike, and what changes they want from Washington and beyond. In a companion deep dive case study, I distill lessons from the writers' first-of-their-kind AI protections and what their remarkable victory means for society, other workers, and how AI is deployed in our economy. -- Case study: https://lnkd.in/evaBv8kG -- Storytelling: https://lnkd.in/eiQ4j_PX The writers illustrate a crucial truth: workers *can* shape how this technology impacts their work, but *if* they have a voice in its design and deployment and the power to share in its benefits. The publications are part of an exciting new The Brookings Institution project with my colleagues Xavier de Souza Briggs and Mark Muro about the future of work and workers as generative AI transforms the economy. We’re combining research, storytelling and engagement across the country, industries and disciplines to identify the best ways workers can benefit from the extraordinary capabilities of this technology and avoid potential harms. I am immensely grateful to the many writers who shared their stories with me, to our fabulously talented communications team led by Leigh Balon for bringing these stories to life, and to Xavier de Souza Briggs for his instrumental feedback on the draft. And of course to the terrific partners at Omidyar Network, including Anmol Chaddha Beth Kanter Alexis Krieg Michael Kubzansky Michele Lawrence Jawando Anamitra Deb Tracy Williams Laura Chavez-Varela for believing in the importance of worker storytelling and supporting this work. Very excited to collaborate with many great partners in the months ahead including Amanda Ballantyne Andrea Dehlendorf Bharat Ramamurti Annette Bernhardt Stephanie Bell Tom Kochan. If you are working on these issues, please reach out, I would love to hear from you. cc Martin Tisné Roy E. Join us at The Brookings Institution for our event on reimagining the global financial architecture As nations around the world grapple with enormous, diverse, and interlocking global challenges, the multilateral system is struggling to rise to the occasion. The disastrous effects of climate change pose an existential threat and are damaging economic and social systems. Geopolitical conflicts and tensions are worsening, leading to devastating humanitarian crises. Highly integrated financial markets are also increasingly vulnerable to cross-border threats, and social inequalities are eroding basic human rights as well as inhibiting social and economic progress. The collective challenges of our modern, interconnected world are straining the multilateral system and pushing for its reform. On April 19, the Global Economy and Development program at the Brookings Institution will host a high-level public event on the sidelines of the 2024 Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group. The event will unveil the report Reforms for a 21st century global financial architecture https://lnkd.in/eB45ncTP
