Abstract

1. General survey. The velocity of light forms an essential part of the electromagnetic wave phenomena. The vacuum value of this velocity is a natural constant of universal importance having more or less direct significance in each process involving energy transport, i.e. where ever anything “happens”. Therefore a great number of investigators has worked in that field and tried to determine that velocity, in vacuo and in matter, by direct or by indirect methods. By and by, the subject thus has become rather extensive and still is rapidly growing.
